announced curtailment of all mining operations on
November 27, 2006, resulting in a loss of jobs to
568 employees and an annual payroll of over 42
million dollars.

Results from survey distributed at the Rapid
Response event showed strong attachment to the
community and strong interest in retraining and
skills upgrading 202 Respondents 78 lived in
Lewis County and 84 owned a home 40 had worked
at the mine 20 or more years 47 said they would
need to be retrained for a different occupation
36 thought they needed to upgrade skills in
their current occupation 26 wanted a job in the
same occupation 46 wanted help with job
search 48 of spouses did not work
