Basics

• Software needs to have broad application
• You should have a rough idea of how many
  departments are interested in the software and
  how many copies of the software are needed
• You need to be willing to commit funds up front

Procedure

• Send your request to osl_at_utah.edu
• Include
• Software title and company contact if you have it
• Very brief description of what the software does
• What software will be used for (lab, teaching,
  etc)
• How many copies of software you need
• When you need the software
• Who else is interested in purchasing/using it
• Your contact information

Decision Process

• Contact vendor - negotiate pricing and terms
• Evaluate purchase economics
• Evaluate strength of financial commitments
• Review license or contract terms
• Review other considerations (vendor, key
  management, distribution mechanism, etc)
• Reply to requestor
• Process takes 1 - 2 weeks
