How long does it take a lorry to overtake another
lorry?

You could provide more structure to the problem
such as the speeds of the two lorries but it is a
richer problem if you let the pupils decide what
values are appropriate. Assuming second lorry
travels at 1mph faster than the first one. Length
of lorry approx 15m Pull out to overtake 2 lorry
lengths before 30m Pull back in 30m after
overtaking Distance 75m Speed 1mph 1mph
0.5mps So it will take about 150 seconds to
overtake 2.5 minutes.
A follow up question might be how far have you
travelled whilst waiting behind the lorry. Speed
60mph 1 mile per minute, time 2.5 minutes so
distance 2.5 miles
