2
Health hazards due to contaminated drinking water
  • 80 of communicable diseases transmitted are via
    faeco-oral route.
  • 50 of children under one year of age suffer from
diarrhea in fortnight in which survey was carried
    out.
  • Typhoid,Cholera,Hepatitis,dysentery, diarrhea
    ,viral and protozoan diseases.

3
Current Methods for detection of potability
  • Time consuming requires 24-48 hours.
  • require trained personnel.
  • microbiological lab.
  • some modified methods require expensive
    media,equipment,etc.

4
There is a need for a method
  • Simple
  • reliable
  • inexpensive
  • rapid
  • sensitive

5
RDT- design and development
  • We have a simple test for detection of coliforms
    in water.
  • It has been accepted worldwide that detection of
coliforms serves as an indicator for detection of
    possible presence of pathogens
  • It can be completed in 3-4 hours.

6
Advantages
  • Speed
  • sensitivity
  • specificity
  • reliability
  • cost
  • no requirement for expensive equipment
  • or trained personnel
  • easy to carry out.

7
Useful in all walks of life
  • Defense
  • remote places
  • households
  • public water supply monitoring system
  • food industry
  • etc

8
TEST FOR PATHOGEN DETECTION
9
Microbes for ecofriendly -green process
development
  • We hold a collection of microbes with novel
    bio-degradative abilities.
  • These are used for cleaning of environment.
  • Disposal of industrial waste
  • effluent
  • household waste.
  • We have natural isolates, GEMs as well as
recombinants which can be suitably tailored
    .combined to suit the needs.
