• Founded 1793

In the beginning

• 1793 Col. John L. Hardenbergh, a veteran of the
  American Revolution, founded Auburn
• Hardenbergh built the first mill on the Owasco
  Outlet, which fostered the growth of the
  community.
• 1805 Originally known as "Hardenbergh's
  Corners," soon after the name was changed to
  "Auburn."
• 1806 Col. Hardenbergh dies. His remains and
  those of his wife are in Auburn's Fort Hill
  Cemetery, in the Mount Hope Section.
• 1815 Auburn became an incorporated village.
• 1848 Auburn received its charter as a city.

Factories

• Wegman Piano Factory, 1882 Owned and operated by
  the Henry Wegman family. The company was a
  division of the Estey Piano Corporation.
• The Auburn Button Works, early 1900s This
  produced test pressings to Berliner, pressed
  Zon-O-Phone discs, and an endless supply of
  custom labels for the International Record
  Company.
• Columbian Rope Company, 1903 Founded by Col.
  E.D. Metcalf. Col. Metcalf would use his bailer
  twine operation as leverage to get into the rope
  industry.

• George R. Metcalf, 1914-2002 State Senator
• Jerome Holland, 1916-1985 Ambassador to Sweden,
  first African American director of the New York
