• Was born as Alcides
• His human dad was named Amphitryon
• When he was less than a year old he killed two
  huge snakes while his half brother just screamed

• Was very dangerous to try and teach him something
  he didnt want to learn
• He was very, very sorry when he killed his music
  teacher
• The teachers that taught subjects he liked all
  survived

• Killed the Thespian lion at eighteen, made a coat
  out of its skin
• Beat the Minyans, Thebans were so happy they let
  him marry the princess Megara
• Megara bore him three sons

• Went crazy and killed his wife and three sons
• Hera restored his sanity afterwards
• His friend Theseus keeps him from killing himself
• Goes to the old prophet at Delphi who tells him
  to go to his cousin and accept whatever task he
  is given

  long as he could touch the ground

• Her father wouldnt pay up, so he captured Troy
  and killed the king
• Freed Prometheus by killing the Eagle

• Apollo was mad at Zeus, who had killed his son
• Apollo killed the Cyclopes
• Zeus made Apollo serve on Earth for a year in the
  house of Admetus
• Apollo made friends with Admetus
• Apollo tells Admetus that he will die soon unless
  he finds a substitute
• Admetus wife chooses to die for him

Rest Stop

• Hercules stopped at his friend Admetus house,
  whose wife had just died
• Admetus didnt tell him his wife was dead
• Hercules gets really drunk, and a servant tells
  him Admetus wife is dead
• Hercules feels bad cause he got drunk, decides to
  bring Admetus wife back from the dead
• Hercules wrestles Death, wins, and makes him give
  back Admetus wife

Greek portrait of Hercules

• There is no other story about Hercules which
  shows so clearly his character as the Greeks saw
  it his blundering stupidity his inability to
  stay sober in a house where someone had died his
  quick penitence and desire to make up for what he
  did, no matter the cost and his perfect
  confidence that not even Death himself was his
  match.

Stupid and Strong

• Accidentally killed a servant boy
• Deliberately killed friend
• Zeus punished him by making him serve Queen
  Omphale for a year or three
• She made him do embarrassing things like dress up
  in womens clothing
• Hercules blamed it all on King Eurytus

Beginning of the End

• Hercules raised an army and sacked King Eurytus
  city
• Sent some captive maidens to his wife
• He was in love with Eurytus daughter
• Deianira (his wife) believed she had a love
  potion to use on him if this ever happened
• Soaks a cloak in the potion and sends it to
  Hercules

End

• Deianira kills herself when she hears what the
  potion did to Hercules
• Hercules orders his servants to build him a
  funeral pyre
• On Olympus he is reconciled with Hera, marries
  Heras daughter Hebe, and lives happily ever after
