Title: DIGESTION AND NUTRITION

1
DIGESTION AND NUTRITION
2
Organs
  • Organs are groups of tissues that are specialized
    to carry out specific functions
  • Some examples are the stomach, lungs. Kidneys and
    heart.

3
Organ System
  • An organ system is a group of organs working
together that have a similar function.
  • The digestive system is composed of organs such
as the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large
    intestine, liver and pancreas.

4
Organ System
  • Organ systems within organisms work together
    closely to ensure proper functioning.
  • For example, the digestive system could not
complete its job if the circulatory system did
not deliver the nutrients to the rest of the body.

5
Technology and Organ Systems
  • X-rays have been used since 1895 to view bones
and soft tissue was first viewed in 1898.
  • Today we use barium to stain organs which allows
x-rays to penetrate and produce a white image of
the organs on a black background.

6
CAT Scans
  • A computerized axial tomography scan, commonly
referred to as a CAT scan, produces pictures of
an object from many different angles using x-ray
    technology.
  • The photos are entered into a computer which can
reassemble the pictures to show 3-D images. It
can distinguish the difference between gases,
liquids and solids and is very useful for
    diagnosing head injuries.

7
Nuclear Imaging
  • Nuclear imaging provides doctors with views of
beating hearts or allows them to detect bone
cancer without the use of surgery.
  • It uses radiation that emits from within the body
to produce information about the function of the
    organ, not just its structure.

8
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • MRI technology works by using the spinning motion
of the nucleus of an atom to produce an image of
the internal structures of the human body.
  • These images can show if organs are functioning
properly and they can also determine if tumours
    are cancerous.

9
CONCLUSION
  • All of these technologies can be used to monitor
organs and organ systems within the human body.
  • They are used as diagnostic tools to provide
information about the structure and function of
    organs and organ systems.
