Chromosome

• Structures in the nucleus that contain DNA
• Condensed and visible during cell division, they
  are thick and double stranded
• Held together by a centromere

Interphase

• Most of the life of the cell is spent in
  interphase
• Period of growth and development
• Cells that no longer divide (nerve muscle
  cells) are always in interphase
• Cant see chromosomes but, they are actively
  duplicating themselves

Prophase

• Chromosomes become visible
• In animal cells, centrioles appear in the
  cytoplasm and move to the opposite ends of the
  cell
• Nucleolus and nuclear membrane begin to fade and
  disappear
• Spindle fibers begin to appear between the
  centrioles

Metaphase

• The double-stranded chromosomes line up along the
  center
• Each centromere becomes attached to a spindle
  fiber

Anaphase

• Each centromere divides
• The 2 strands of the chromosome separate
• The separate strands move toward the opposite ends

Telophase

• Centrioles and spindle fibers begin to disappear
• Chromosomes become long strands that are hard to
  see
• Nuclear membrane forms and a new nucleolus appears
