Title: Coming to Clewiston High School

1
Coming to Clewiston High School
  • Things every freshman should know to survive and
    thrive.

2
Frequent Concerns
  • I dont know my way around. Ill be lost at the
    high school.
  • Staff members are all around. Dont be afraid to
ask. Theyll be glad to help you find your way.
Its common to be a little concerned or anxious
when youre going to some place you dont know.
Dont worry. Youll be right at home in a couple
of weeks. This is only a temporary feeling.
Freshman orientation is designed to help
familiarize you with the campus. It will be held
on August 14th from 630 to 8 PM. It will
    commence in the auditorium.

3
Frequent Concerns
  • Academic The work is much harder at the high
school. It might be too hard for me.
  • Its true the work is harder at high school than
middle school. Its also harder at college than
high school. Just as our bodies grow so does our
capacity to learn. Plenty of help is available
    if you seek it!
  • 1st See your counselor to talk about the learning
problems youre having. There are a number of
strategies that can be used to help you succeed.
  • 2nd Talk to your teacher and explain the
difficulties. Teachers will work with you after
school and give you extra help if you ask them.

4
Academic Concerns
  • 3rd Take advantage of special tutoring programs.
Migrant students have special tutors to help
them. All students can be tutored by members of
the National Honor Society who offer tutoring two
or three days a week after school.
  • 4th Find a study buddy. Get to know the students
in your classes that are good students. Often,
theyll be glad to help you if you ask.

5
Academic Concerns
  • Ask parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors
who know the subject (s) with which you are
    having difficulty.
  • Look on the Internet for educational resources on
subjects and topics that are confusing. Others
might be experiencing the same thing.
  • IMPORTANT Once you find a site you find helpful,
have your teacher check it out to make sure it is
accurate and not giving you faulty information.

6
Academic Concerns
  • View the study skills section on the schools
    guidance website.
  • Ask questions. Its the only way to really learn
  • See your counselor to discuss the problem.
  • Remember only you can know if you have an
understanding of the material. Its up to you!

7
Personal Concerns
  • Because Im a freshman, older students will
    bully and harass me.
  • This is a common myth. We do not tolerate this
behavior at CHS. If you are harassed or bullied,
you should report it immediately to a teacher,
counselor, principal, resource officer, or other
    adult at the school.
  • Walk away from any situation you find threatening
and report to the nearest adult if possible.
  • Get out of the dangerous situation then seek the
nearest adult and report the incident.
  • Do not be intimidated. This is how bullies exert
    their power. Report them immediately.

8
Specific Concerns
  • If you have specific concerns, arrange to meet
with your counselor before you begin high school.

9
Know your counselor
  • Your counselor addresses your concerns
    academic, personal, and social
  • Counselors keep information confidential or on a
    needs to know basis.
  • Remember your counselor is there to help.
  • Your counselor will be Mr. Korean
  • He can be reached at 983-1520 ext. 511 or email
    Koreang_at_hendry.k12.fl.us.org

Planning for the FutureActivities and Sports at
CHS
  • Many students do not participate in our
    extracurricular activities. Then, when theyre
seniors they have nothing to list on their
resumes. This severely limits their chances of
landing scholarships or, in some cases, being
    accepted to certain schools.

11
Participating in Activities and Sports
  • Participating in a club or sport helps you make
new friends and meet new people. In addition,
participating helps you learn to work
collaboratively with others to achieve common
goals, a valuable skill needed in the workplace.
Lastly, participation in activities and sports
creates lasting friendships and memories you will
    treasure throughout your life.
