• - Economy based on agriculture.

• - Tobacco led to the need of plantations for

for the main house but for the slave quarters
because it was here that Alcee Fortier recorded
folklores from slaves and wrote Brer Rabbit.

• - Growing tobacco required intense manual labor.
  After nurturing the plant, the barrels of tobacco
  would weigh over 1,000 pounds.

• - Too much land and not enough workers
  colonists needed help. England had numerous
  people who were run off their land. English who
  were willing to sell their labor for a chance to
  come to America and acquire their own land.
  People were known as indentured servants.

III. Southern Society

• A. The Planter Elite wealthy landowners/gentry.
  Had a lot of influence. Most plantations were
  small estates in 1600s (30 workers). Use of
  indentured servants led to larger plantations.

• B. Backcountry Farmers More than ½ of
  indentured servants died before gaining their
  freedom
• - Known as yeoman to distinguish themselves
  from the gentry.
• - Practiced subsistence farming (vocab.)

• A. Unequal distribution of wealth (small grp of
  wealthy planters at top and many farmers, slaves,
  servants at the bottom)
• B. Gov Berkeley exempted himself and his friends
  from paying taxes, restricted voters to those who
  had property.

  b/c they didnt need the land this angered the
  farmers.

• D. April 1676 Bacon (well-to-do planter) took up
  cause of farmers he organized his own militia
  and attacked the Native Americans.
• House of Burgesses gave Bacon 1,000 men army to
  attack Nat Am.
• Bacon kept fighting Berkeley until Bacon died
  hiding in a swamp in October 1676.

V. The Middle Passage

• Between 10-12 mil Africans were forcibly
  transported to the Americas between 1450 and
  1870.
• Over 2 mil died at sea during the transports.

• C. Equiano was kidnapped from his home by other
  Africans and traded to Europeans. Wrote about his
  experience and later in life learned to read and
  write. Eventually wrote his autobiography.
