Math in story books
  • When reading with your child, point out math
    things.
  • Use books as an opportunity to discuss math with
    your child.

Patterning
  • Use everyday items to make patterns i.e.
    necklaces.
  • Have students make their own patterns or describe
    one you have made.
  • Use things like cereal, colored goldfish or toys.
    You can even use socks.

Money
  • What coins are in my pocket?
  • Money Match
  • Shopping List and coupons
  • How much change?

Measuring
  • Cooking fractions
  • Measuring with non-standard units, i.e. LEGOS or
    shoes.
  • Which container holds the most water in the
    bathtub.
  • How many small spoons can fill a measuring cup?

Estimation
  • Guessing how many are in a jar.
  • Estimation is a difficult concept. Guesses may be
    way off actual numbers. This will improve.
  • Actually count the number to see if estimate is
    reasonable.
  • You can use candy, cookies, coins, macaroni,
    nuts and bolts, etc.

Sorting
  • Sort everyday objects by color, shape, number of
    sides, etc.
  • Use muffin pans for small objects.
  • Sort socks, cereal, clothes, toys, etc.

Sets
  • Use cards for concentration games
  • Use dice for one to one correspondence, or to add
    and multiply.
  • Card games like Go Fish for number identification.

  • How many cookies can we each have?
