Chapter 8, Publishing and Presentation
  • Why Publish the Results?
  • Tools for Publishing
  • Basic Layout
  • Rules
  • Headers and Footers
  • Using Pictures and Graphics
  • Paper Reports
  • Newspapers and Magazines
  • Books
  • Electronic Reports
  • Multimedia Presentations
  • Creating Web Pages
  • Radio and Television

2
Why Present the Results?...
  • After students have completed an integrated
computer lesson, the final step is for them to
    present their results.
  • The publishing process enables students to
synthesize (produce) ideas as they work through
their data determine what to tell others about
    what they have found/learned.
  • The publishing process helps students discover
ideas and relationships from their data analysis
which further enhances the learning process
  • Students can publish their results through
  • Writing
  • Television and radio style programs
  • Web pages
  • Multimedia presentations (ex. PowerPoint)
  • Paper and/or Electronic Portfolio

3
Tools for Publishing Basic Layout
  • Layout refers to how the report looks on paper
and computer screen including the margins, font,
    text styles
  • Margins if a pages margin is too narrow or
contains little white space, the page appears
cramped may deter some readers. If the pages
margin is too wide, the page can appear to have
too much white space, therefore one needs to be
careful when selecting margins for result
    presentations
  • Fonts Computers come w/various types of fonts.
Fonts can be purchased from CD-ROMs and the
Internet and they can also be downloaded from the
Internet for free. When selecting a font type, it
is important to choose one that is appropriate
for the particular type of presentation. Students
can use different sizes of font for headings and
they can choose to bold, italicize, shadow,
outline, etcfor emphasis. Its important that
students stick w/the same font on a particular
presentation but utilize the many variations of
emphasizing the font to produce a
    professional-looking presentation.

Tools for Publishing Basic Layout Continued
Styles
  • Styles are predetermined formatting selections
that students can apply to their documents such
as a specific font size for headings and body
text, bulleted lists, picture captions, etc
  • ____________________________________
  • Tools for Publishing Rules
  • Rules are thin or thick lines used to separate
text books often have a rule near the top of the
page to separate a heading or pg. from the body
text (ex. newspapers use rules to separate
stories or quotes in a story or to highlight a
    table)

5
Tools for Publishing Headers and Footers
  • Headers and footers are used to place the same
information at the top and bottom of every page
or group of pages in a document headers and
footers are useful for assembling a portfolio or
    a document w/contributions from several
    students.________________________________________
________Tools for Publishing Using Pictures and
    Graphics
  • The final aspect of creating a type of
report/presentation is to add pictures or
graphics to illustrate text students can use
graphics they have created w/a draw program,
photographs from a digital camera, scanned
pictures, clipart, and/or images they have
located and saved from the web.
  • When using a graphic w/text, the student will
need to make a decision concerning how the text
    is wrapped around the graphic

6
Paper Reports
  • Students creating a book, magazine, or newspaper
provides a more appropriate method for
disseminating new knowledge than simply writing a
    traditional type of report.
  • Example 1 A class that has created numerous
traditional reports on animals or the solar
system might prepare a book on these subjects for
    a lower grade.
  • Example 2 A class that has completed a project
identifying plants or leaves in a park or school
might create a book for the library or the park
    commission on these topics.
  • Students can also create a magazine or newspaper
    to report similar findings.

7
Newspapers and Magazines
  • When students create a newsletter, newspaper,
    and/or magazine to present their
results/findings, it is important that the
teacher to create a basic layout/template for the
    students to follow.
  • The basic layout/template usually contains the
heading or master-head that appears at the top of
    the 1st page
  • A magazine, newsletter, and newspaper requires
initial planning. After determining the heading
for the layout, the next thing to plan for is how
many columns of text the publication will
    contain.
  • The final step in creating a magazine,
newsletter, and/or newspaper is to determine how
the students will number each edition of they
plan on publishing their newspaper, newsletter,
or magazine on a regular basis the students will
also need an editor for each edition
  • It is important that the students are provided
w/a template for whatever publication they choose
to create so that everyone uses the same styles
    when preparing their articles.

8
Books
  • There are 3 additional considerations for
creating a book in relation to preparing a
    newsletter, newspaper, and/or magazine.
  • 1st There must be a larger left margin for
    binding a book
  • 2nd A table pf contents must be planned and
    implemented
  • 3rd The book should be printed to create facing
    pages
  • A word processor can be used to create the book
layout and a copy machine can be used to print
    back-to-back pages.

9
Electronic Reports
  • Multimedia Presentations can incorporate sound,
graphics, animation, video, and text multimedia
presentations can be created as electronic
    slideshows or hypermedia stacks
  • PowerPoint is a multimedia software program
  • Hyperstudio is a multimedia software program
  • When creating a multimedia presentation, the
teacher and/or students should address the
    following questions
  • Who is the intended audience?
  • What is the project topic?
  • What information will this project share?
  • What is the actual purpose or goal of this
    project?
  • Students should create a storyboard of their
project during the planning stage of their
    multimedia presentation.

10
Creating Web Pages
  • Printed materials and multimedia presentations
reach a relatively small audience and are
typically limited to times the student or author
is available to present and/or distribute the
information the World Wide Web (www), however,
offers the advantage of making student research
available to others beyond the classroom.
  • Web pages are created using special tags made up
of HTML that tell the web browser (ex. Internet
Explorer) to display text, graphics, animations,
    movies, other features.
  • When creating a web page, the teacher and student
can format the font as they choose tables,
graphics, color, and links can also be added to
web pages to enhance their overall look and
affect the page has on the viewer.
  • There are 4 things to consider when creating a
    web page
  • Goal Why are you and/or your students publishing
a web page? What do you want the web page to
    accomplish?
  • Content Be sure you web page/site has something
    to say
  • Graphics Be conservative in the graphics you
select to use and make sure the graphics are
useful and appropriate for the content/theme
    displayed on the web page/site
  • Layout Information located on the web page
should be identified quickly and easily

11
Radio and Television
  • Students can use either real or mock broadcasts
to report their findings/results a radio program
can be combined w/a multimedia presentation to
provide a narrated slide show to view in the
classroom or place on the Web.
  • A television broadcast could be taped in the
classroom, broadcast from the schools studio,
broadcast on the local educational or local
access channel, or converted to digital video
    distributed on the Internet.

12
Summary
  • The presentation of results/findings step of the
NTeQ model is an important part of the learning
    process.
  • The action of creating the presentation provides
an environment for the learners to reflect and
make connections w/the new content and ideas
  • The action also provides the students w/the
opportunity to communicate their findings to
others which will enable them to practice and
refine their communication skills as well as
    receive recognition for their work
  • Students can publish their work in a variety of
    formats
  • Traditional written/word-processed paper report
  • Transform a report into a newsletter, newspaper,
    or magazine
  • Create a multimedia presentation
  • Create a presentation for a real or mock
    radio/television program
  • Create a web page/site to be displayed on the
    Internet
  • When students publish and present their work, 5
of the 6 NETS for Students are specifically
    addressed Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (see p. 222
in your textbook for specific standards)
