- Identity theft is when a person uses your
personal information to assume your identity.
3How to Prevent Identity Theft
- Mail - Shred unwanted
loan and credit card applications or any other
unwanted mail with personal info. - Telephone - Never give personal
information over the phone. - Credit Card - DONT carry more than one
credit card in case your purse or wallet is
stolen. - Bank Accounts - Do not print your social security
number or drivers license number on checks.

- Many branches of law enforcement call identity
theft the fastest growing crime in America. - Over 9.9 million people were victims in the last
year. - Most of the time people dont even know how
criminals get their personal information.
5Forms of Identity Fraud
- Mail Fraud
- Credit Card Fraud
- Social Security Number Misuse
- Account Fraud - bank, telephone ect.
6How can a criminal steal personal information?
- They steal personal belongings that contain
credit cards, checks, Social Security cards and
mail. - They use computers to hack into organization
records such as your employee records or your
bank accounts. - They can complete Change of Address forms to
have your mail sent to a different location. - They search the trash to find unshredded
documents containing personal information.
7Criminals use Identity Theft to
- Open credit card accounts in your name to make
purchases. - Obtain phone service for long distance calling.
- Establish bank accounts to write cold checks.
- Apply for new loans.
- Give your name to the police if arrested. Your
record will show the arrest.

- Names
- Address
- Social Security number
- Bank account number
- Credit card number
- Birth date
9 Be Watchful
- Watch for these signs
- Checks or credit cards disappear from your
belongings. - You receive bills you do not owe.
- Your monthly bills do not appear.
- You are informed that you have poor credit scores.
10Whats being done?
- In 1998, Congress passed the Identity Theft and
Assumption Deterrance Act. It forbids someone
from knowingly transferring or using without
lawful authority, a means of identification of
another person with the intent to commit, or to
aid and abet any unlawful activity that
constitutes a felony under any applicable state
or local law.
11 Do these steps if YOU are a victim
- Close all accounts that you know or believe have
been tampered with. - Report your case to the police as soon as
possible. - Contact the Federal Trade Commission to file a
complaint. This provides federal law agencies the
necessary information to track and identify the
thieves. - Contact the three credit agencies to place a
fraud alert on your credit report.

- People violating this law may be imprisoned for
up to 15 years, pay a fine, and lose any property
used to commit the crime.
