Changing to KDE

• You need to switch the desktop from the default
  gnome to KDE
• use switchdesk KDE at the terminal window
• logout and login again (no reboot!!) to make it
  happen
• You need to change appearance and style
• use Control Center Style to select KDE classic
  style
• use Control Center Window Decorations to select
  KDE 2 format
• Can you change more than these?
• Yes, use Control Center Theme Manager and select
  a variety of themes

• Remove applications you dont want
• Change browser application to Firefox
• open the browser properties dialog
• change application and program name
• finally change the icon to Firefox

• Add other applications to the toolbar
• Thunderbird, Terminal (shell window), Kedit (text
  editor), gFTP and Ksnapshot, or other frequently
  used.
• Click on a blank area of the toolbar and select
  Add, Application button, and look for the
  application on the Menu
• Move the applications on the toolbar to a
  sequence you like, as in this example.

Complete your customization

• Change background and screen saver using Control
  Center
• Open a shell window and change password
• Setup Thunderbird as e-mail software
• IMAP or POP incoming server mail.ubalt.edu
• SMTP server smtp.ubalt.edu
• username uxxxxx_at_cis.ubalt.edu
• You can also set it up for other accounts

Creating links to applications

• Place additional applications in your desktop
  (e.g. Gimp)
• right-click on the desktop and select create new
  link to application
• General tab type Gimp, click on the icon and
  find its icon
• Application tab in the command line type gimp
  and OK

• Create a link to file manager starting in your
  home directory
• right-click on the desktop and select create new
  link to location
• enter Home as the name and /home/youraccount as
  URL
• change the icon to gnome-home
• make file manager show files in tree view and
  hidden files
