Locally Grown Organic Food Food that Helps
You And the Environment
Presentation by Nile Wilson
4
The Question
What are the benefits of a diet composed of
locally grown organic foods and how can locally
grown organic food be made into a more profitable
market?
5
What is Organic?
Organic food is produce and vegetation that is
grown in farms that do not use pesticides,
chemical fertilizers, colorings, preservatives,
and other unnatural substances.
6
Locally grown organic food is the organic food
that is grown in your community.

The Benefits
1. Health

1. Health Benefits
Less toxins in your body
Smaller chance of getting cancer
More anti-oxidants

9
Why is it so?
Organic food is not genetically modified
Contains no pesticides
Contains no preservatives
10
Oh No! GMO!
Certain genetically modified crops have also
been proven to cause immune system damage,
digestive problems, excessive cell growth (which
can lead to cancer), and shrinkage of the brain,
liver, and testicles. (Smith)

11
Pesticides
Pesticides are chemicals applied (usually
sprayed) onto crops to kill pests that damage the
crop.
Often inefficient because the pests life cycles
short (reproduction high)

The issue called biomagnification
12
Preservatives
Are substances added to food to prolong freshness
Common synthetic preservatives include calcium
propionate, sodium nitrate, sulfites, and
disodium EDTA.
Synthetic preservatives proven to cause
respiratory and other health problems

Natural Preservatives
Substances Salt, vinegar, and sugar

Processes Freezing, pickling, smoking, and
salting
14
Pickling
Anaerobic fermentation

Lactic acids

15
Smoking and Curing
Generally meats are smoked/cured

Add salt and other substances to dry out the meat
16
2. Environmental Benefits
No Pesticides used
More biodiversity
Natural fertilizers used

/corn.jpg
Less fuel emissions from transportation (locally
grown organic)
17
No Pesticides

/pesticide.jpg
Applied pesticides usually have contact with more
than just the intended target
Gets into the systems of other wildlife and
biomagnification occurs
18
Biodiversity
GMOs have their genes modified to exploit
desirable traits
Ex.) This desirable strain of a crop is grown
more, biodiversity decreases. Sometimes, a
bacterium develops that only targets this strain.
If there are not many other variations of the
same crop, the bacterium will practically wipe
out the crop.

Genetic Modification
20
The Crop
21
The Aftermath
22
Natural Fertilizer
Seaweed, grass clippings, mulch, animal manure,
wood ash, compost

ds_in_compost.jpg
Contains calcium, magnesium, iron, nitrogen,
phosphate, potassium, and other trace elements
23
Fuel Emissions
Less travel means less fuel used to transport the
goods

This lowers the rate of fuel emissions introduced
into the atmosphere.
24
3. Economic Benefits
http//media.photobucket.com/image/money/bishop085
/money.jpg
More labor more jobs
The money supports your community
25
Profitability?
Currently a relatively small market (not the most
profitable market)
Can be made more profitable by educating the
public and advertising
Incentive programs can help
Government aid
