Title: Inventory and Dispersal of PEPII Accelerator Hardware

1
Inventory and Dispersal of PEP-II Accelerator
Hardware
  • M. Sullivan
  • PEP-II DD team

2
Overview of Inventory Tracking
  • There are three of us J. Seeman, M. Sullivan
(area physicist), K. Burrows (area manager) who
are controlling the inventory of the PEP-II
    hardware.
  • Requests for PEP-II hardware, which generally
come in through email, are recorded on a
spreadsheet and we have weekly meetings to decide
    which requests to honor.
  • Once a requestor has been granted permission to
remove the hardware, the action is entered as an
ARTEMIS entry (Accelerator Remedy Trouble Entry
Maintenance Information System) so that we can
track the completion of the removal of the
hardware. ARTEMIS is our unified trouble entry,
work planning and job tracking software.
  • The item(s) are then also flagged on the master
spreadsheet as having been removed, who the party
was, and when the removal occurred.
  • The spreadsheet is updated regularly as new
requests come in and as permissions are granted
    to remove certain hardware items.

3
  • Below is the list of approved hardware requests
    so far.
  • We presently have 114 additional open requests.

4
Some Examples
  • R. Chestnut from controls asked for two computers
to be used as servers for LCLS.
  • These computers were used as part of the system
to monitor the bunch current in each ring and to
control which bunch to fill from the injector.
  • Their removal in no way hampered other hardware
    monitoring systems.
  • A. de Lira from power conversion asked for
several intermediate power supplies to be used
    for LCLS
  • Near the end of PEP-II running we were raising
the high-energy ring energy in order to perform
an energy scan above the upsilon 4S
  • Two power supplies from LCLS were used in the
high-energy ring to replace supplies that were
    reaching their limit
  • LCLS also had a supply that was inadequate for
the BC2 magnet and could use one from PEP-II
  • In addition, the power supply group has a very
detailed database of information on the PEP-II
    power supplies and related hardware

Hardware Requests
  • We are honoring in lab requests first
  • LCLS
  • SPEAR3-SSRL
  • Power supply group (PCM)
  • Vacuum group
  • Controls group
  • Outside lab requests include the following
  • BNL-ALS
  • Fermilab Project X
  • Jefferson Lab
  • INFN, Italy
  • IHEP, China
  • Cornell

6
The Cornell Request for ECI Hardware
  • The Cornell request is a special case.
  • They and the ILC group here at SLAC want to
remove an experimental setup installed in the
low-energy ring to study ECI effects. The
experiment was cut short due to the shortened Run
    7.
  • Since this was a special piece of apparatus (beam
pipes, detectors, magnets and power supplies)
permission for removal of this apparatus has been
    granted.

7
Hardware maintenance
  • Kathy Burrows is the area manager of the PEP-II
ring and support buildings (except for IR2 which
    is controlled by BaBar)
  • She regularly monitors the ring to make sure
everything is in order with a weekly inspection
    of the entire ring
  • We are keeping the tunnel lighting and safety
systems (i. e. fire extinguishers and smoke
    alarms) intact and regularly inspected
  • Some of the first things we want to do is to vent
the vacuum system and turn off and blow out the
    water systems.
  • Scott has more detail concerning our ramp down to
    MMS.
