2Marine Management Area Science (MMAS) Program
MMAS Vision Provide scientific answers to the
critical questions confronting the management of
marine multiple-use and protected areas.
3Marine Management Area Science (MMAS) Research
Themes
- Management effectiveness
- Population and habitat connectivity
- Resiliency
- Economic and cultural values
- Conservation and economic development
- Enforcement
4Objectives
Economic Valuation Study
- To quantify economic values of marine management
area (MMA) ecosystems - To establish general research protocols to be
applied at other sites
5Sites
Venetia Hargreaves-Allen
6The study will address two questions 1) What
is the total economic value (TEV) of goods and
services derived from a particular marine
ecosystem? 2) How is the flow of those and
other goods and services altered by the
imposition of a policy regime aimed at conserving
the ecosystem?
7What is the total economic value (TEV) of goods
and services derived for a particular marine
ecosystem?
- 3 Scenarios
- Economic value of the marine resources and
services associated with 1 MMA per country (e.g.
Coiba National Park) - Economic value if the area was not a MMA
- Economic value if new threat was introduced to
the area (e.g. Brazil shrimp farming)
8Economic Valuation into Action!
- To demonstrate to policy-makers, managers, user
groups and other stakeholders the importance of
MMAs based on these 4 MMA analyses! - Looking to do more MMA sites

15- How is the flow of goods and services altered
by the imposition of a policy regime aimed at
conserving the ecosystem? - Approaches
- 1. with and without policy interventions,
- using control communities,
- as a time-series,
- by estimating effects of policy
- intervention.
16Contribution to MMA Science
- The results will provide scientific evidence of
the importance of MPAs compared with if there
were no MPAs, demonstrate the socioeconomic
impacts of the threat and provide a basis for
gauging socioeconomic impacts of additional,
future threats to the MPAs. - Â
- In each country the research will engage and
inform local leaders, conservation professionals
in NGOs and government who play active management
and support roles in marine conservation efforts. - The results of all 4 sites will together
demonstrate the value of MPAs around the world,
which will be used to demonstrate to
international organizations and high-level
policy-makers worldwide the importance and
benefits of MPAs.
17Questions for YOU!
- Will these economic values of MMAs be useful to
you in your work? HOW?! - How can we best share the results with you (e.g.
e-mail 1 page summary? Publication? Powerpoint?
How?)
