3Adding Integers
4The Rules for adding integers are as follows 1.
If the numbers have the same signs, add them and
keep that sign. 2. If they have opposite signs,
subtract and take the sign of the larger number.
5Adding Integers
Half the addition problems are easy!
If both numbers are positive, just add them like
you did in first grade!
6If both numbers are negative, add them the same
way. Just remember that the sum will be
__________also!
negative
7The other half of the problems are a little
trickier!
If one of the numbers is positive and the other
is negative.
Remember, if a number has no sign, it is
positive.
8So if you are adding...
First, think of the numbers 9 and 5
Second, calculate the _________ between 9 and 5.
difference
9Give the sum the same sign as the LARGER absolute
value.
10Sample Problems
11It is -1oC
4 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3
- The temperature rises by 2 degrees
- What temperature is it now?
1oC
12-1510
-5
13-1520
5
14Adding a positive and a negative number is like
having two plays in football. One where you gain
yardage and one where you lose yardage. The
answer is the amount of change from the two plays
combined.
15The Jacksonville Jaguars lose 4 yards on the
first play and gain 6 yards on their second play.
What is the net gain?
2 yards!!
