Review English Grammar
  • English does not have reflexive verbs.
  • English has reflexive pronouns.
  • Reflexive pronouns end in self or selves.
  • They are used only to refer to another word in
the sentence or to emphasize another word in the
    sentence.
  • ExampleHe told me the whole story himself.

3
Reflexive Verbs
  • In Spanish they can be identified by the -se
ending that is attached to the verb infinitive
(the form ending in ar, -er, or ir).
  • Examplesbañarse ponerse vestirse

4
  • A reflexive verb is one where the action is
performed by the subject on itself.
  • Yo levantarme tarde. I get myself up late.

5
  • It has a reflexive pronoun as its object (direct
or indirect). Me miro en el espejo.

6
  • The subject and the reflexive pronoun refer to
    the same person or thing.
  • Yo me lavo. I wash myself.

7
  • In some instances, a verb may have both a
    reflexive and a non-reflexive form.
  • Reflexive--Se llama Rosa. She calls herself
Rosa or Her name is Rosa.

8
  • A verb that can be reflexive may be used without
a reflexive pronoun if the action is performed
upon or for someone else, in which case the verb
    is no longer considered reflexive.
  • Non-reflexive--Ella te llama. She calls
    you.

9
  • Some verbs that are generally not used
reflexively may be made reflexive by adding the
    reflexive pronoun.
  • Yo miro la televisión. I watch television.
  • Me miro en el espejo. I look at myself in the
    mirror.

10
Negative Forms
  • To make a reflexive verb negative put no or the
negative word before the reflexive pronoun.
  • No, no me levanto a las siete. No I dont get up
    at seven oclock.
  • Nunca me levanto a las siete. I never get up
