  • Before beginning instruction, it is important for
    the teacher to know which stage of language
    acquisition the ESL student is in.
  • It is not unusual for students to be in different
    proficiency levels in listening, speaking,
    reading, and writing

Strategies
  • Increase comprehension by giving clues (mostly
    non-verbal) to make input understandable.
    Visual, demonstrations, hands-on learning,
    graphic organizers.
  • Increase interaction through communicating with
    others. Cooperative learning, study buddies,
    projects, tutors.

  • Increase thinking/study skills by teaching
    thinking skills and thinking language by focusing
    instruction on higher order thinking tasks
    (discovery, synthesis, evaluation).
  • Help them understand textbooks by teaching the
    text backwards
  • Do selected applications based on materials
    (something that applies to the lesson)
  • Discuss the material in class (key vocabulary
    words and concepts.
  • Answer study questions at the end of the chapter
    (preview pictures, diagrams etc.)
  • Read the text (divide chapter up into small parts
    to increase understanding)
