Title: Walk for Diabetes

1
Walk for Diabetes
  • November, 2006
  • Prince Edward Elementary

2
Awareness
  • From the Sept. 6, 2006 World Health Organization
    meeting in Australia
  • There are now more overweight people in the world
(1 billion) than undernourished (600 million).
  • Obesity is now a world pandemic threat, and will
overwhelm health systems with diabetes, heart
disease, stroke, and some forms of cancer.
  • One of the most worrying problems is the
skyrocketing rate of obesity in children. This
may be the first generation of children to die
before their parents because of health problems
    related to weight.

3
Awareness
  • From 1997 to 2004, the number of newly diagnosed
diabetics in the U.S. increased by 54
  • It is now estimated that one in three children
born in the U.S. will develop Type 2 diabetes in
their lifetime (Centers for Disease Control,
    2003).
  • Type 2 diabetes is related to diet, exercise, and
the bodys ability to produce insulin. Once
called adult-onset, Type-2 diabetes is now
    appearing in children and adolescents.

4
Awareness
  • The rate of diabetes in Virginia is 20.8 cases
    per 100,000 people.
  • In Prince Edward County, the rate is 34.4 per
    100,000.
  • We have the third highest rate in our health
    planning district (Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte,
Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward
    counties).

5
Awareness
  • 1 in 500 children has Type-1 diabetes. At PECES,
    we have four.
  • In type-1 diabetes, the body stops producing
insulin. Diet and exercise are not the cause,
but are part of the treatment. Only 5 of people
with diabetes have this kind there is no cure,
and it is a daily struggle to balance blood sugar
    levels.
  • 95 of diabetics have type-2 diabetes. Type-2
can usually be controlled with diet and exercise.
In fact, most people at risk for type-2 can
delay or prevent the disease by losing 5-7 of
    their body weight.

6
What We Can Do
  • The heart of our campaign comes from the American
Diabetes Association (ADA), and their School Walk
    for Diabetes program.
  • ADA works for education, awareness, and advocacy
for BOTH types of diabetes, in addition to
    funding research for a cure.
  • 10 of the funds raised will be returned to PECES
for the purchase of sports and medical equipment
    from US-Games.
