The Miracle of the Beginning Reader I wriggle
and I jiggleAnd I rock upon my chairI wriggle
my loose tooth,And I twirl a strand of hair.I
chew on several fingersAnd I sometimes suck my
thumb.I tap the reading tableLike I'd play upon
a drum.I kick my foot with rhythm,Lose the
place where I should look.I rub my nose and
clear my throat,And sometimes drop my book.I
look outside the windowAnd I look down at the
floor.I pay very close attentionWhen someone's
at the door.I close my eyes and rest my
headMy teacher's heart must bleed.But in spite
of all thisI'm learning how to read!

The Book Selection

• Each year a committee selects eight titles from
  the nominated books.
• The books selected must have been published
  within the last five years and be currently in
  print.
• Care has been taken to choose both fiction and
  nonfiction.
• Nominations for books to be considered for the
  2007-2008 school year are due by December 15,
  2007.

Registration

• Schools are asked to submit a form indicating
  their intent to participate between September 1
  and December 15, 2007.
• Packets of ideas and other free materials will be
  sent to registered schools beginning in
  September.
• Those schools registering after December 15th
  will be welcome to vote, but are not guaranteed a
  complete packet.

Award Procedures

• Once students have heard at least five of the
  eight Children's Book Award titles, they are
  eligible to vote.
• Votes are to be sent to the Children's Book Award
  chairman. Ballots must be received no later than
  April 15, 2008.
• The winning books will be posted on the FRA
  website (www.flreads.org) by May 1st.

  on examining text features and structure simply
  because it has a table of context and page
  numbers.
• Since this collection of poems is humorous, you
  can use it to introduce a lesson on limericks
  that are adjusted for young children.
• When reading these poems, draw students
  attention to the many idioms throughout the book.
