Wal-Marts History
Wal-Mart was founded by Sam Walton in 1962 with
its store opening in Rogers, Arkansas. On
October 31, 1969 Wal-Mart became incorporated as
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. As the years past,
Wal-Mart grew to become the nations number 1
retailer and left the competition behind. As it
continues to grow internationally, Wal-mart will
keep improving its operations by implementing new
innovations with unique techniques accompanied
with information technology.

Advertising
  • Past

Present
Future
5
Advertising in the Past
  • Advertising was mostly done through newspapers,
    radio, and word of mouth.
  • Advertising was not so complicated since
Wal-Mart did not carry so many products or have
    so many stores back then.
  • Most of the jobs available at Wal-Mart were
    advertised through the paper.

6
Advertising in the Present
  • Today, a lot of Wal-Marts advertising is done
through television, the Sunday paper and the
    internet.
  • Many of the good deals within Wal-Mart are for
    online shoppers.

7
Advertising in the Present (continued)
  • The information that Wal-Mart gives out in
commercials and newspapers pertains only to the
    products and services they offer.
  • Advertisements only reveal the types of
products available and their low prices.
  • The commercials also advertise Wal-Mart as a
    store for everyone.

8
Advertising in the Present (continued)
  • On the their Website, the information goes way
    beyond products and prices.
  • You can also find anything from the
organizations vision to where other Wal-Marts
are located to what jobs are available.
  • Wal-Marts site is very similar to their
commercials in that it is very lively.
  • The site also tries to give the same shopping
experience as going to an actual Wal-Mart would.

9
Advertising in the Future
10
Advertising in the Future
  • Advertising in the future is bound to not change
so dramatically, and this will be due to the
fact that not all people will be reached through
    just one form of advertising.

11
Advertising in the Future (continued)
  • However, since the internet will be very
popular, Wal-Mart will spend more money on
internet advertising for their products and
    available jobs.

12
Wal-Mart
  • Inventory Control

13
Wal-Mart
  • One stop shopping center
  • 36 different departments
  • Apparel accessories, jewelry, lawn garden
    center, health beauty aids, electronics,
    pharmacy, etc.
  • Designed to save customers time and money

14
Wal-Mart
  • With the immense variety of products that
Wal-Mart has to offer, it must implement new
technology in order to offer low prices to its
    customers.
  • The action taken by Wal-Mart was the
introduction of the automated inventory management

15
Wal-Mart
  • Invested one-half billion dollars annually to
    automate inventory management
  • Objective was to have the right merchandise at
the right place at the right time.
  • Through stock keeping units (SKUs), items are
identified as they arrive the store and as they
    are sold.

16
SKUs and Bar Code
  • With a single scan at the point of purchase, a
continuous stream of information is provided to
    both Wal-Mart and its suppliers
  • When the universal product code (represented by
a series of vertical bars) is scanned, the
following information is written to the Wal-Mart
database SKU number, name of product, size of
    product, selling price and cost.

17
Locator Program
  • If store expects a shortage (a stock out), store
clerks or managers can, with a hand held
computer, use Wal-Marts Item Locator Program to
    find inventory elsewhere.
  • Then phone call is made to request the SKU

18
VideOcart
  • New toy for the discount shopper
  • As the shopper pushes the VideOcart through the
store, information about the department at hand
flashes onto the attached video screen.
  • Cart also helps customers find items in the
store by listing hundreds of products by
department and then displaying a map of the store.

19
Data Transmission
  • Data are transmitted to and from Wal-Marts home
    office several times a day
  • When special events- say national news about a
product- occurs, store managers and company
executives can order changes in displays, pricing
    or shipments

20
Retail Link
  • The database is connected with 2,500 of
    Wal-Marts 10,000 suppliers, including
    Warner-Lambert.
  • To help both Wal-Mart and suppliers adjust to
shifting demand, 65 weeks of sales data for each
    item are maintained.
