• I blinked. It couldnt be. There was nothing
  in Louiss basic programming that would allow for
  a question like this (188). Today, computers
  have become an increasingly important part of
  everyday life. In the short story User
  Friendly, by T. Ernesto Bethancourt, the main
  character, Kevin, finds out just how important,
  and ominous, a computer can be. As Kevin blinks,
  he realizes his computer is asking him questions
  and interacting with him just like a human would.
  At first, the lonely teenager enjoys the
  interaction with the computer, whom he names
  Louis. However, as the story progresses, Louis
  becomes obsessed with destroying all of Kevins
  enemies, making Kevins lonely life, as well as
  many others lives, even more stressful. Kevin
  learns to become clever and compassionate in
  order to overcome what becomes a frightening
  situation with his new found electronic friend.
• Kevins parents spend lots of time away from
  him because of their busy work schedules. Kevin
  is also very intelligent, and therefore doesnt
  fit in with the other kids at school. He is a
  lonely high school student who would like nothing
  more than to have a friend. He is so lonely in
  fact, that Kevins dad even builds him a computer
  with a personality in the hopes that Kevin can
  have a computer for a friend. Kevin explains, I
  think he also wanted to give me a sort of friend.
  I dont have manyFace it, I dont have any. The
  kids at school stay away from me like Im a freak
  or something (189). Kevin is all alone and
  desperate for company. It is easy to understand
  why he is so willing to become friends with a
  machine when his computer Louis suddenly seems
  to come alive and begins interacting with him.
  However, Kevin soon learns that it is better to
  be alone without problems than to have a friend
  who is menacing.

• Kevins friendship with Louis begins when Kevin
  turns on the computer and Louis starts asking him
  personal questions. At first, Kevins friendship
  with Louis eases his loneliness, giving him
  someone to talk to. Kevin assumes the
  personality his father installed in the
  computer is interacting with him harmlessly. But
  soon, Kevin finds out that Louis is not the
  innocent, incapable electronic advice that Kevin
  assumes he is. Louis begins to take revenge on
  Kevins enemies. So, Kevin must learn to become
  very clever to avoid becoming punished when his
  enemies come to seek their own revenges. For
  example, Louis begins harassing Ginny Linke, whom
  Kevin has a crush on, once she insults Kevin.
  Louis sends the family tons of junk mail, and

  Kevin up, Kevin has to think of a clever way to
  escape the physical punishment. He sneaks away by
  telling Chuck that the Vice Principal is coming
  (192). Kevin, however, is not safe for long. He
  must return to school again, and becomes very
  distressed about the prospect of his enemies now
  exacting revenge on him. Kevin realizes that
  despite his feelings for his new friend, he must
  find a way to end Louiss life before the
  computer does real harm to someone.

  computers life for the sake of everyone
  involved. On the way home from school, he frets
  over the decision and says that he feels like a
  rat about cutting Louis off. When he comes home

  he can, Kevin is visibly upset. He explains
  There were tears in my eyes and I knew I
  couldnt explain them to Dad, or myself either
  (195). Kevin obviously feels compassion for the
  computer despite all of the problems the computer
  has caused him. He has learned to feel sympathy
  for his electronic friend, but at the same time
  understands that he has to sacrifice the
  closeness he feels with his companion in the best
  interest of others. Kevin is willing to make this
  sacrifice, showing he has grown and matured as a
