- Introduction
- Objectives
- To highlight why undertaking a literature review
is important - To help you to minimise potential difficulties
and problems in undertaking the literature review
through past dissertation experience - To discuss key concepts and pointers for
undertaking a literature review
4The Literature Review
- Why undertake a literature review first?
- To examine similar studies and research
- To avoid wasting resources
- To learn from similar studies and research
- In other words, to add to our knowledge about the
topic and to place research in context - Purpose is
- Show how other researchers have approached
similar investigations - Indicate other data sources which you may not yet
have considered as being relevant to your topic
5The Literature Review
Figure 12.1. Activity/destination hub model for
wine tourism
- Highlight potential difficulties which may be
confronted with such a study and ways of
overcoming them - Provide you with new approaches to, or ideas on
the chosen study area - Put our forthcoming study into perspective with
what has previously been done in the area - Introduce us to theoretical models which have
been derived by specialists in the subject area

6Problems and Issues
- PlagiarismTHE P WORD!!!
- What is it exactly?
- Note down what you think it is
- Why does it happen?
- Intentional deception and types of deception. BUT
WHY? - Unintentional due to poor scholarship and
inexperience - Why bother?
- Someone elses ideas, thoughts, words, research
and work! - Their intellectual property!
- Commercially you need to pay for passages used
over 500 words to publisher who pays royalty to
author - Example is my book contract 25 of fee per
diagram/text block
7Problems and Issues
- Referencing
- Maps, diagrams, figures or models may prove
useful but still need referencing if they are
from somewhere else or are adapted from elsewhere
8Problems and Issues
- Text Referencing
- Take notes and quotes with page numbers in the
left hand column - Highlight key passages
- Ensure that you reference direct quotes and
paraphrased material - Harvard style (Jones 199823) or Jones (199823)
... - Be consistent throughout the dissertation
9Problems and Issues
- Bibliography
- Start compilation early with appropriate Harvard
style - Do not separate types of references
- Alphabetical reference lists
- Again, be consistent
