Maritime Communications Problems Multipath
Reflections
- Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) play important
roles in high-risk intelligence, surveillance,
and reconnaissance missions - Mission success depends on reliable
communications link - Maritime communications suffer from multipath
fading due to water surface reflections
3University of Hawaii and Referentia
Multipath Issues and State of the Art
- Multipath fading can be reduced
- Using multiple antennas
- Tightly focused beams
- Signal processing
- Special modulation schemes
- However
- Multipath fading not completely eliminated
- Not effective in mobile scenarios
4University of Hawaii and Referentia
Turning Multipath Issue into Asset
- Multipath strengthens signal
- Use multipath as additional signal paths through
Phase Conjugation - Retrodirective array leverages additional signal
paths mathematically, without complex controllers
- Technique proven at the University of Hawaii
Microwave Milimeter-Wave Research Laboratory
(MMRL) for simplified terrestrial scenario - Develop model to explore, possibly culminating in
physical demonstration

Multipath Communications Phase Conjugating
Array Use an innovative antenna technology to
reduce signal fading from multipath propagation
effects. Retrodirective Antenna
Research Multipath signals will be used to
enhance communications in severe multipath
environments. In the ideal case, the fading can
be completely avoided and multipath propagation
will actually improve the radio channel. The
system uses a single non-steered retrodirective
antenna to send a phase-conjugated signal back to
the opposite site.
Benefit Improved communications in severe
maritime communications environments, potential
use in other commercial markets Challenges Produ
cing model to accurately simulate and analyze
phase conjugation Production of prototype for
