EGEE is a project funded by the European Union
under contract IST-2003-508833
2Goals of the tutorial
- give an introduction on the current EGEE
- middleware
- give an overview of the grid services and
- infrastructure
- show how to use the grid resources
-
3Some preliminary info
- DataGrid (EDG)
- grid project funded by the EU FP5 (2001-2004)
- middleware release (base for LCG)
- LCG (LHC Computing Grid)
http//www.cern.ch/LCG - CERN project started in 2002
- european grid infrastructure (partially
overlapping with INFNGRID - infrastructure)
- middleware release (e.g. LCG2)
- INFNGRID
http//grid.infn.it - INFN project started in 2000
- italian grid production infrastructure (aka
Grid.it) - middleware release (e.g. INFNGRID-2.3.0,
based on LCG-2.3.0)
4Some preliminary info (cont.)
- EGEE
http//www-eu-egee.org - grid project funded by the EU FP6 (2004-2006)
- european grid infrastructure (interconnection of
the national grids) - middleware release (e.g. EGEE-0 aka LCG2)
- gLite will be the next middleware release
- GILDA
https//gilda.ct.infn.
it - testbed (test infrastructure) used for demos,
test of applications, - tutorials and dissemination
- uses the INFNGRID m/w release

10Few notes on EGEE
- The EGEE middleware system has been developed in
several different languages and by many different
people in different countries - Programming languages such as C, C, Python,
Java etc. have been used - End user APIs usually exist in either C, C or
Java - CLI and API libraries are either available in
/opt/edg or /opt/lcg - /bin CLI commands
- .../lib for C, C libraries
- .../share/java for Java libraries
-
- The API signature is not very coherent primarily
due to different languages, technologies and
maturity of middleware parts - Web services usually allow for a higher
diversity of language bindings (APIs) than
standard C or C based services
