Title: Year 7 Sustainable Travel Survey
1Year 7 Sustainable Travel Survey
- Conducted and Reported
- November / December 2008
- Year 7 Students
2How do you normally travel to school?
- Elisha
-
- Walk 108 82 sustainable travel modes
- Cycle 52
- Bus 17
- Car 37
- Van 1
- Taxi 2
- So what does this tell us?
- This is a very good result for our school as the
national average is about 70 and we are well
above this. This means lots of our Year 7
students walk, cycle or bus to school and keep
fit at the same time.
3Which is the healthiest way to travel to school?
- Georgia
- Walk 135 93 sustainable travel modes
- Cycle 58
- Bus 9
- Car 2
- Van 2
- Taxi 1
- So what does this tell us?
- Again this is excellent with most of our Year 7
students walking or cycling to school which
keeps them fit, energetic and healthy. We need to
follow the highway code if we come to school like
this.
4How long does it take you to get to school?
- Shannon
- 10 15 minutes 114
- 15 20 minutes 58
- 20 25 minutes 20
- 25 30 minutes 42
- 30 35 minutes 3
- 30 plus minutes 6
- So what does this tell us?
-
- Most people take between 10 and 20 minutes to
get to school but quite a few others have longer
distances to travel. The impressive thing is that
they still choose a healthy way to come to
school. Lots of students use City Link or
Stagecoach to come to school which is great.
5Do you know what sustainable travel is?
- Elisha
- Yes 46
- No 152 70
- So what does this tell us?
- This shows that Year 7 students are not so clear
on what sustainable travel is. It is travel that
can be kept going despite oil and petrol
shortages like walking that costs nothing,
cycling where you only need a bike and well by
bus you need a ticket. The least sustainable of
these is the bus of course, because it needs fuel.
6What is your favourite way to get to school?
- Melissa
-
- Walking 61
- Cycling 95
- Bussing 15
- By car 27
- By van 3
- By taxi 5
- So what does this tell us?
-
- In Year 7 we just love walking and cycling to
school. Juts look at us, we are so fit. We are
looking after our future health and life chances.
A healthy body gives a healthy mind.
7Do you wear a cycle helmet?
- Leah
- Yes 43
- No 157 72
- So what does this tell us?
- This tells us
- 43 people wear a cycle helmet when riding a
bike. - 157 people don't wear there helmets when
they ride their bikes. - The 60 people who don't own a bike, its OK
if you don't wear a helmet - Dont forget you could possibly crack your
skull if you are careless. - Thanks for being so very honest!
- Better to be safe rather than sorry.
8Do you have a bike and do you use the bike park?
- Rumaysa
- Yes 158
- No 60
- Yes 110
- No 108
- So what does this tell us?
This information tells us that most of us have
bikes and most use the bike park. They should say
that all people that ride a bike to school use
the bike park as for using the bike park is safer
than chaining your bike to a post because in
school it is being noticed and only people from
your school can see it. It is also a lot
healthier to ride a bike to school as you are
using both your arm and leg muscles. Do yourself
a favour and ride your bike to school.
9Key issues from survey and what we can do about
them!
- Mr Campbell
- Key issues
- Number of students that use sustainable travel to
TVS is brilliant. - Length of time it takes some students to get to
school is about 15 minutes. - Number of students that do not know what
sustainable travel means is high. - Number of students who do not wear cycle helmets
is high. - Number of students who could come to school by
bike is growing. - Ideas for improving things further
- Road cycling proficiency
- Year 7 Road Safety talks
- Asking for a helmet from Mr Campbell
- Cycling rather than coming to TVS by car
- All take more care travelling to TVS
- Enter competitions for safer travel like the one
coming up with Ecovert.
