Key Information for Welsh fans in Belfast
Belfast has been the capital of Northern Ireland
since its creation in 1921 by the
Government of Ireland act. Since it began to
emerge as a major city, it has been the scene of
much sectarian conflict between its Roman
Catholic and Protestant populations. The opposing
groups in this conflict are now often termed
'nationalists and 'unionists respectively. The
most recent example of this is the Troubles - a
civil conflict that raged from c.1969 to the late
1990s.
Belfast saw the worst of the Troubles in Northern
Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement has encouraged
large-scale redevelopment, such as Victoria
Square, the Cathedral Quarter, the Titanic
Quarter and Lagan side including the new Odyssey
complex and the landmark Waterfront Hall. Much of
the city centre has now been pedestrianised.
Queen's University of Belfast is the main
university in Belfast. The University of Ulster
also maintains a campus in the city, which
concentrates on fine art and design. Despite bad
publicity over the past few decades, Belfast is
now a popular city break destination and a 2003
quality of life survey found Belfast residents to
be the most contented city-dwellers in the
UK. For Obvious reasons then the pubs in the City
centre do their best to make it a trouble free
zone. They try to avoid anything that may cause
conflict, many licensees will not admit
supporters wearing football shirts of any
description. Flags are also unwelcome in many
pubs, there are plenty of bouncers to enforce
policies on the doors. Even singing, if it gets
too boisterous can be frowned upon. Baseball
caps are also not welcome in most venues. Pubs
that will admit colours in their bars
are Wetherspoons, Robinsons, The Beaton Docket,
Laverys, Empire, Bar Twelve, Parlour, M Club,
The Globe and Benedicts amongst others. NB - It
all depends really on the circumstances on the
day and individual licensees can change their
minds. If you want to guarantee avoiding being
refused entry to bars, either dont wear or dont
show your team colours.

4Belfast Revisited
Only 14 months after our previous visit in
October 2005, we find ourselves back in the
beautiful city of Belfast. Over 1200 Welsh
supporters made the trip then but we only expect
around 300 for this friendly match. Most of our
guidelines remain the same from our previous
visit and we advise all Welsh supporters to abide
by local laws and customs. Our two FSF Cymru
representatives on duty in Belfast will be
Melanie Richard and Paul Randall. They are
pictured below and will be on call throughout
your trip. If you are in need of any help or
assistance please contact one of the reps on the
helpline number provided 07905 861848

What to do
in Belfast One of the major tourist attractions
in the city is viewing the murals along the Falls
Rd (Catholic) and Shankill Rd (Protestant). One
of the best ways to do this is either route No 11
bus for the Shankill Rd or route No 10 for the
Falls Rd. Alternatively, you can hire a black
cab for around 10 per person for approx 2 hrs.
The drivers are very knowledgeable about the
divisions within the city and can give you the
low down on the history of the murals and their
sectarian roots. Queens University is also a
popular landmark, along with Belfast Castle,
Stormont and of course The Crown liquor Saloon (a
National Trust pub) !
