3The Student MilestoneApproach A
Student-Centered and Learning-Centered Model
- Background and Historical Information
- What is the Student Milestone Model?
- How do we use it at MVCC?
- Learning dialogue discussion
- Question and Answer
4Why?
- Title III Grant Audit of student services
- Milestone Approach to Student Transition and
Success Model - Identify and define the critical milestones that
students go through at the college - Document impact of services on student learning
and success to include student satisfaction - Comprehensive Review and Assessment of student
development services - Collected and compiled data from across the
division - Service Process Review
- Macro across division (2003-2004)
- Micro within each department (2004-2006)
5How Developed?
- Milestone goals and outcomes include
- Student learning outcomes/goals
- Process outcomes/goals
- Two major questions we asked
- What impact do we want to have on our students
at each phase? - What do we want them to know and be able to do
as a result of the student services and programs
that we provide?
6What is it?
- Student Services Model focused on
- student learning
- student development
- student success
- Places emphasis on the needs of individual
learners as they transition through various
phases throughout the college - Macro transformative approach to viewing student
services in relation to student needs - Includes seven stages with goals and outcomes
related to each stage (see handouts)
7Assumptions of Milestone Approach
- It reflects MVCCs learning college philosophy
that the process used to ensure the effectiveness
of student services places students at the center
of the learning by linking the Milestone goals to
student outcomes. - Student development members utilization of it
will have a documented positive impact on student
learning, student development and student
success, to include an increase in student
satisfaction.
8Assumptions of Milestone Approach
- It will allow student development members to
place emphasis on how well processes are
integrated across departments within the
division, rather than only within individual
departments in their delivery of services to
students, where there is a need. - It will allow student development members to
revise service processes in line with the
Milestone goals so that they assist students with
transitioning through each Milestone phase. - It will become infused into student development
members conceptual framework with regard to
delivering services to students.
9Theoretical Considerations
- Student Development Students are engaged with
the college over a period of time. During this
period of time, students have different needs and
are presented with different sets of choices and
decisions. The college must present learning
opportunities that will cause progress and
success. A developmental perspective, identifying
student learning outcomes at various stages of
engagement, provides for a student-centered,
student development model. - Human Development Model A model focused on human
growth and development if we are to make a real
difference (developing human potential).
10Theoretical Considerations
- Promote Life -Long Learning Use career and life
planning skills in real world activities, i.e.,
service learning and experiential learning. - One-Stop Shop Model Student services are
provided to students in a centralized location
and in an integral way. - Integrated Student Services Staff have
integral/interrelated roles in providing students
the services that they need. Academic Advisor
informing students about financial aid office.
Cross-training of staff. - Responding to Student Needs Data informed
Student Needs Inventory College Student
Inventory.
11Theoretical Considerations
- Student Learning and Success Assess and document
student learning styles. - Staff and Organizational Development Individual
relationships, communication, professional
courtesy, customer satisfaction, attitudinal
behaviors. - CAS Standards Mission of service provided by
department and standards. - Assessment Review and assess student services
processes in line with student transitional
phases, evaluate effectiveness of programs,
student satisfaction surveys, staff professional
development needs.
12Theoretical Considerations
- Prove that Student Services result in Student
Success How do we know? - Responsiveness to Shifting Demographics
Non-traditional students/returning students,
international, diverse ethnic backgrounds,
at-risk, special needs. - Learning Organizations Systems thinking all
organizations and human activities are
interrelated, the whole rather than fragmented
parts building shared vision collective
understanding of the organization, its values,
goals and mission.
