    teacher education program with several delivery
    options.
  • We do not offer alternative certification, nor
    is our program the quickest way to get
    certified.
  • Well educated, properly prepared teachers are
    more likely to be successful in the classroom.

We require the following for recommendation for
teacher certification
  • Coursework
  • Field Experiences
  • Student Teaching
  • Passing scores on the appropriate exams

Eligibility
  • Bachelors Degree from an Accredited College or
    University
  • AND
  • 2.5 overall GPA in all college coursework
  • Texas Administrative Code-Title 19, part 7,
    chapter 227, states that candidates
  • seeking teacher certification must
    have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 or at
  • least 2.5 in the last 60 semester
    credit hours
  • OR
  • 2.50 GPA in the last 60 hours of college
    coursework
  • OR
  • New courseworks GPA taken after the initial
    degree was awarded-number of hours required
    varies
  • OR
  • Admission to a Texas State University Masters
    Degree program
  • OR
  • An advanced degree

  • ESL Generalist
  • Certification 36 credit hours plus student
    teaching
  • CMED 36 credit hours plus student teaching
  • Bilingual Generalist

  • These plans require between 27 and 33 hours of
    coursework plus student teaching to complete
    certification, and about 36 hours for
    certification and a Masters Degree (CMED).

  • All plans require at least 15 credit hours of
    Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility
    coursework plus student teaching for
    certification. Students may also be required to
    complete additional or remediation coursework in
    their selected content area. Approximately 36
    credit hours are required for certification and a
    Masters Degree in Secondary Education - CMED in
    secondary education.

Application Procedures
  • Apply to the Graduate College (10 fee for
    certification-seeking, 40 or 50 fee for
    degree-seeking) and submit official transcripts.
  • After receiving your acceptance letter from the
    Graduate College, fill out the Certification Plan
    Request Form and submit the 75 fee to the Center
    for Student and Professional Services in the
    Office of Educator Preparation- education
    building 2016 or apply on-line by clicking here.
  • Certification Plans take 4 to 6 weeks for
    processing and preparation and will not be
    written until you have been accepted through the
    Graduate College.
  • We do not give refunds!

  • If youre in doubt about your GPA,
  • apply to the Graduate College as a teacher
    certification seeking student and your overall
    GPA and last 60 hours GPA will be calculated.
  • If you do not meet eligibility criteria for
    TEACHER CERTIFICATION, you will receive
    notification from the Graduate College, followed
    by a letter from the
  • Office of Educator Preparation explaining
  • how you can become eligible.

Graduate College Admission Deadlines for Degree
Seeking Students
  • For Fall Semester June 15th
  • For Spring Semester October 15th
  • For Summer I Session April 15th
  • For Summer II Session June 1st
  • It is possible to begin as Certification-Seeking
    and switch to Degree-Seeking through the Graduate
    College.
  • However, only 6 hours of Post-Graduate coursework
    taken as a certification-seeking only student can
    be applied to a degree program once admitted as a
    degree-seeking student.

Certification Course Options
  • Our certification courses are offered at the
    Graduate level for all Post-Baccalaureate
    students. These courses are offered in the
    following ways
  • Evening courses here at the San Marcos campus
  • Evening courses at the Round Rock Higher
    Education Center
  • Online courses (available for Secondary/All-level
    students only)
  • Some coursework is available during the daymust
    see an advisor for information regarding daytime
    courses.
  • Additional coursework needed for the content area
    will not be available online or in Round Rock in
    most cases.

Required Field Experience
  • Post-Baccalaureate students will be
    responsible for completing field experience on
    their own, usually during the long semester prior
    to student teaching. Field experience is part of
    a class that you will take for certification.
    Your professors will give you more information
    regarding this requirement.

  • Students will be responsible for completing 30
    hours of observation as well as other activities
    related to the observation experience.

Student Teaching
  • All students are required to complete 13-14 weeks
    of full-time, unpaid student teaching during one
    long semester (fall or spring).
  • Student teachers are placed in districts in the
    greater Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio
    corridor. We also have partnerships in the
    Houston and Dallas areas.
  • Students must attend a mandatory Student Teacher
    Round-Up at the beginning of the long semester
    prior to the student teaching semester.
  • (Check the website for dates)
  • Student teaching is always the last requirement
    to complete. All other coursework must be
    completed prior to student teaching.

Certification Exams
  • All Certification-seeking students must pass the
    appropriate State-mandated exams (ExCET/TExES)
    for their content area, and a TExES exam for the
    PPR. Foreign language certificates also require
    the TOPT.
  • The PPR Exam will cover age appropriate teaching
    methods, classroom management, etc.
  • The Content Area Exam will cover the course
    content that you will be teaching.
  • Please refer to your certification plan for the
    date by which you should take your content area
    exam, or for content area coursework
    requirements.

Certification Exam Requirements
  • A practice test is required before test
    approval will be given for the real PPR. This
    practice exam is usually taken the semester prior
    to student teaching.
  • Some content area exams have practice tests held
    in their respective departments. Please visit
    www.education.txstate/oep and click on
    TExES/TOPT for more information.

Remember
  • A Certification Plan does not guarantee course
    availability. You may not be able to begin
    coursework or complete required courses in your
    desired timeframe. Advanced Registration is the
    best way to register for necessary courses.
