  • Topic 21

2
Childrens Literature for Social Studies
  • Literature adds value to any social studies
    program!
  • Motivations for at risk students and ELL
    students.

3
Independent Reading
  • How does a person incorporate independent reading
into an elementary social studies program?
  • Independent reading-students are assigned reading
from sources other than their textbooks.
  • This can take place in a summer book club or it
can be planned in lessons throughout the year.

4
Continuations
  • When a teacher wants literacy and learning social
studies for goals, assigning books for students
    to read is not enough!
  • Students need a structured approach to reading
    books as an independent activity.
  • Communication for independent reading to parents
and actively soliciting their involvement in
    their childrens reading assignments are
    essential.

5
Lesson
  • Each student is required to read a book over a
two or three week period. Students are to
independently read different books at their own
pace. This lesson is based on the theme of
    success.
  • Grade levels 3-6
  • Page 178

6
Variations on this approach
  • This should not be limited to biographies.
  • This can be used to accommodate a range of social
studies topics and can be used with books or
    Internet sources for research projects.
  • Different topics could be required such as
    chronologies, maps, outlines, summaries, etc

7
A book in one hour
  • This is a second approach
  • A teacher would use a trade book at the fourth
    grade level, (number the stars).
  • The teacher would write the main characters names
on the chalkboard as a reference. The students,
in the order of the numbered sections, then
proceed to tell the story to the rest of the
    class.

8
Continue
  • The students will want to know what came before
    and after their passages.
  • The suspense and peer pressure ensure that each
student thinks carefully about how he or she will
    articulate a summary.

9
Trade Book Resources
  • Childrens fiction and nonfiction books are an
excellent starting point for developing lesson
    plans.
  • Each year, Social studies for the young learner,
publish by the NCSS, includes a special edition
on childrens books with advice on how they can
be integrated with the then themes.
Provides an annual list and summary of
childrens books published since 1997 that are
    excellent for social studies education.

10
Trade books
  • Trade books can also be used in read-alouds. The
teacher can appear in period dress or in
character in order to do a dramatic reading.
  • This can be used to inspire students to consider
how to make the world a better place and become a
    better person themselves.
