    1775 that opened the Tennessee country for
    settlement, predicting that whites would regret
    purchasing a dark and bloody ground

  • Bartram traveled through Cherokee country,
    recording the animal and plant life in 1792
  • He characterized the Cherokees idealistically,
    writing, companies of young, innocent Cherokee
    virgin, some busy gathering the rich fragrant
    fruit, others having already filled their
    baskets, lay reclined under the shade offragrant
    native bowers.The sylvan scene of primitive
    innocence was enchanting, and perhaps too
    enticing for hearty young men long to continue
    idle spectators.
