6The Cherokee Nation
- In 1790, the United States agreed to recognize
the Cherokee in Georgia as their own nation with
their own laws and constitution - In the 1830s, Georgia refused to recognize the
Cherokee Nation
7The Cherokee look to the courts
- Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that Georgia
had no right to interfere with the Cherokee
President Andrew Jackson vowed to ignore the
Supreme Courts ruling, saying John Marshall
has made his decision now let him enforce it!
8The Trail of Tears
- Jackson sent General Winfield Scott to forcibly
remove the Cherokee - 17,000 Cherokees moved to Oklahoma
- About 4,500 died on the trip

- Chief Osceola of the Seminoles of Florida
Although the Seminoles had been pressured to sign
treaties, Chief Osceola and some of his people
decided not to leave. Instead, they decided to
go to war with the United States.
