How much of this food is grown locally?
  • Paradise Bakery
  • Upon asking my manager where we get our food sent
to us from, I determined that none of the food
used in our café is grown locally. Most of it
comes from California, while a few items come
    from Florida.
  • McDonalds
  • Technically none of the food we use is local
food. However we do use the freshest, highest
    quality ingredients.- Mona Snell, General
    Manager of local McDonalds.

How much of this food is grown locally?
(continued)
  • Subway
  • In store, I spoke with an employee and found out
that they do not get there food from local
farmers, they get it shipped from various parts
    of the country.
  • Safeway Grocery Store
  • Gets there produce shipped from different areas
of the country where the items grow the best.

11
What are the benefits of local food?
  • Local food is healthier. Theres less time from
when the food is harvested to when it reaches
    your mouth.
  • Companies use less fuel getting the food. Using
less fuel leads to less oil consumption and less
    pollution
  • Supporting local farmers and local agriculture.
It is better to keep the money in the community
rather than giving it to big corporations.

12
Why Not Local Food?
  • A trend you can see among many businesses is not
buying local food from local farmers. Some
reasons they dont buy food locally are
  • Corporate standards- Each restaurant uses the
same things from the same place.
  • Farmers do not grow enough produce to support all
    of the local restaurants.
  • Not enough people are concerned with where their
food comes from and dont care if there food is
    local or not

13
Some Solutions to the Problem
  • Grow your own food! More people need to grow
gardens, even if it does not consist of much.
Wendell Berry, author of the article On the
Pleasures of Eating, says that to truly
understand the pleasure of eating, one must
understand the love and work that can come from
    producing your own food

14
Some Solutions to the Problem
  • Visit your local farmers and farmers markets.
  • You can learn a great amount of knowledge about
food and how it is grown by visiting these
    places.

15
Singh Farms
  • When I visited Ken Singhs Farm off of the 101
and Thomas Rd. I was amazed by what he was doing.
  • Mr. Singhs farm was run by only the members of
his family and all of the vegetables and fruits
he grew he gave to local hotels like the Hilton
    and the Sheridan.
  • This is a perfect way to put local food into the
    community.
  • Mr. Singh also takes ASUs green waste and turns
it into compost for them and everyone to use.
