The Provisional Government

• The provisional government had problems right
  from the start.

Decided to stay in the war
Didnt begin land redistribution
didnt have army support
Didnt make food production a high priority
Had to share power with the Petrograd Soviet

Land

• Peasants tied to help themselves to land

The Provisional Government tried to stop them

FOOD

• The PG failed to bring food into the towns, and
  to persuade the peasants to grow more food

The Russian people were still starving - even
without the TSAR

The Army

• In order to take attention away from the fact
  that the PG was forcibly stopping peasants from
  taking land, the army was ordered to ATTACK the
  AUSTRIANS

It was a major defeat for the Russian Army
Mass desertion by troops

Lenin

• Returned to Russian in April 1917 -

Slogan of Peace Bread and Land Won immediate
popular support
Lenins return paid for by the Germans because
they knew he would pull Russia out of the War
