What is the criminaljustice system?

5
What is the effect of thecriminal justice system?
6
Current System
  • Sentenced to 7 years in jail
  • Come out on parole with no education
  • The young child he left is now in his teens
  • He cant hold a job
  • The only friends he has are criminals

7
This is bad because...
  • - Jail is often way too harsh of a punishment for
non-violent crimes (such as drug possession).
drugs crime stats etc- They network with other,
    worse criminal sorts.
  • - They pop out the other end with no new useful
skills to get back into society and no resources
to help them along (such as savings).
  • Offenders are taken away from their families and
often their children for extended periods.
  • Offenders do not learn how to function well
within society, so they very often recidivate
(66 of the time, or whatever).
  • Jail is expensive. 22k per criminal, per year.
This money could be better spent.
  • Expenditure stats

Heres what happens for criminals.
Heres what happens for society.
  • Lower rates of recidivism.
  • Its still cheaper...
  • Offenders can become productive members of
    society.
  • They are compelled to good behavior by the
watchful eye of the system. Time horizon.
    Malleability.
  • They are surrounded by people who can be a more
    positive influence on their lives.
  • Serving less time in jail, they can work jobs,
pay taxes, and save money while still under
    confinement.
  • With the money we save, we can provide them with
    real rehabilitative services.

when we put limits on them, they can get back on
