Creativity and Innovation

• The Middle School Years

Why?

• Innovation and invention have proven to be very
  successful in engaging young people and can have
  a special appeal to students in upper elementary
  and middle school. Awareness of the importance
  and significance of creativity and innovation can
  build interest in the science, technology and
  engineering fields and ultimately drive new
  venture creation.

Program Setup

• Eight Weeks Long, After School Program, one and a
  half hours sessions
• Program provider, partnered with the Springfield
  Department of Parks and Recreation
• 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant for
  After School Enrichment
• Extension funded by private foundation

The Program Scope

• The students participating in the workshop series
  will be introduced to the fundamentals of how to
  go from idea to market. The series will focus on
  innovation and invention and will include
• Introduction to Invention
• Creativity and Brainstorming
• Adaptive and Universal Design
• Design Challenges and Protoyping
• Inventors Journal and Intellectual Property
• How to Market an Invention

How?

• STCC will instill fun into learning through a
  variety of teaching methodologies including hands
  on activities, guest speakers, game playing,
  small group activities and projects. The
  activities are designed to stimulate creative
  problem solving and innovative thinking

Activities

• Creativity. Activities build the tallest
  structure, brain teasers, the Brain Game, erector
  sets, Deep Dive video.
• Where do invention ideas come from? Activities
  Worlds greatest inventions, group brainstorm of
  everyday challenges, students invention ideas.
• Universal and adaptive design special thought
  to individuals with disabilities. Activities
  Experience disabilities while opening bottles,
  dialing a phone (uses work gloves and goggles).
• Protecting your ideas keeping an inventors
  journal. Activities Distribution and instruction
  in keeping an inventors journal.
• Design challenge figure out an invention that
  solves a specific challenge. Use student
  identified challenges when possible.
• Building prototypes. Activities Hands on
  building of prototype using multiple materials.
  Design Contest.
• Bringing new ideas to the market. Activities
  Creating ads for new products, print and video.
• Institute for Black Invention Presentation
  featuring young inventors.
