Boston Tea Party Facts

• In the 1760s the British Parliament was taxing
  the colonies for items like sugar, wine, and
  paper goods. The colonists were not happy about
  this so when the Britain's would not listen they
  decided to take matters into their own hands.

• On the night of December 16, 1773, some
  colonists, dressed as American Indians, climbed
  aboard the ships. They opened hundreds of boxes
  of tea and threw them into the water. If there
  was no tea, there would be nothing to tax! This
  event became known as the Boston Tea Party.

• Britain's King George and Parliament were
  furious. British warships were sent to Boston
  Harbor to block any ships sailing into or out of
  Boston. The British said that they would block
  the harbor until the tea was paid for. This
  British blockade ruined Boston's trade.

• This power struggle continued until it
  culminated in the Revolutionary War, which
  started in 1775

The Story of Yankee Doodle Made Famous Thanks to
the Revolutionary War! (Told by the Yankee Doodle
Song himself!) Hello, my name is Yankee Doodle
the song. Once upon a time in the 15th century, I
was known as the tune to Lucky Locket, a
British nursery rhyme. As the years went by and
colonies began to settle in the new land called
America, my tune was sung to new words. I am
ashamed to say, that when I was first written as
the Yankee Doodle song, my words werent very
kind. The man who wrote my words was named
Richard Schuckburgh, and he was a popular British
surgeon. When the new American colonists were
fighting in the Revolutionary War, the British
soldiers who were friends with Mr. Schuckburgh
used me to make fun of the Americans. For
example, the word Yankee was used to talk about
the English (Americans). In my song you also
sing the word macaroni, now this wasnt singing
about pasta! Instead, when I say stuck a feather
in his hat and called it macaroni, I am really
singing about how Yankee Doodle is proud to be a
country bumpkin (someone who is not very smart).
Lastly, when I say as thick as hasty pudding, I
dont mean Jell-O pudding! I am actually singing
about a dessert made with cornmeal, milk, and
molasses (Yuck!). Even though I was created to
make fun of the Americans, the joke was really on
Mr. Shuckburgh and his soldier friends because
the American colonists actually liked me and I
became one of the most famous songs in America!
Some even say I am one of the greatest reminders
of Americas boldness and independence. However,
the best thing of all, even about 600 years after
my tune was born, children all over the world are
still singing me, the Yankee Doodle song!
