Terminology

• ISP Internet Service Provider. (The company you
  connect to to get an internet connection.)
• Spam Unsolicited e-mail (junk mail)
• Download Receiving content from the Internet,
  to your computer.
• Upload Sending content from your computer to
  the Internet.
• Modem A device that allows a computer to make a
  phone call and speak to another computer.

Terminology

• DSL or DSL Modem (Digital Subscriber Line) a
  device that sends and receives signals
  transmitted over your phone line. This signal
  does not interfere with making phone calls.
• Cable Modem a device that sends and receives
  signals over your cable TV connection. This
  signal does not interfere with viewing cable
  television.
• kbps kilobits per second. A quantitative
  measurement of connection speed. With computers
  bigger is better.

• Modem (dialup) 56 kbps uses a phone line to
  make a phone call. Some people prefer to get an
  extra phone line for this reason.
• Broadband 128-1544 kbps (much faster than modem)
• DSL Limited to 2 mi. from phone company
  distribution center. Call the ISP to see if it
  is available at your location.
• Cable Modem from Cable TV company
• Wireless Requires Line of Sight to an Access
  Point
