• We have three types of verbs
• 1. Regular (weak)--work, worked, worked
• 2. Irregular (strong)--go, went, gone
• sing, sang, sung
• 3. Mixed (half strong, half weak)--bring,
  brought, brought

Present Perfect Tense

• Is a form of the past tense with two components
• helping verb --have in English
• past participle (third principle part of a
  verb)
• work, worked, worked (regular verb)
• go, went, gone (irregular
  verb)

Present Perfect

• In German we also have two components
• the helping verbs are haben for verbs that may
  or can have a direct object (transitive verbs) or
  sein for verbs of motion or verbs that cannot
  have a direct object (intransitive verbs)
• the past participle

Past Participle of Regular Verbs

• machen--infinitive
• 1.take off en to form the stem mach
• 2.add ge to the beginning and t at the end
• to get gemacht
• 3. verbs with sep. prefixes add ge in the
  middle mitmachen becomes mitgemacht
• 4. Verbs with inseparable prefixes (be, er) do
  NOT add ge
• besuchen becomes besucht, erzählen becomes
  erzählt
