WHAT EXACTLY IS A FOSSIL?

• Fossils are remains or traces of prehistoric
  plant and animals.
• Fossils are often found in sedimentary rock, in
  organic matter, limestone, sandstone, and shale.
• Fossils range in age from 3.5 billion years to
  10,000 years old.

Process of fossilization

• Remains of organisms may be placed by minerals
  that dissolve into a acidic solution to leave an
  impression.

REPLACEMENT

• Replacement occurs when and organism is buried in
  the mud and its remains are replaced by minerals
  such as Sulfide or Phosphate.
• This process may replace soft tissue, preserving
  rarely seen details of the organism's anatomy.

WHERE FOSSILS ARE FOUND

• Fossils are found in all parts of the world, from
  Greenland to Antarctica.
• They can be found on the ocean floor and on top
  of the highest mountains.
