How PRESUD has assisted Venice to move towards
sustainable development

• There are a lot of common situations in European
  Cities, or similar problems that might be
  resolved in the same way. Comparison and exchange
  between people that work in the same field
  becomes more important every day, and PRESUD has
  been an important opportunity for sharing
  knowledge and new ideas.

In order to move towards sustainable development
it is fundamental to have the different
departments of the local government working
together this is something unusual in our
experience and came about in PRESUD.
It is essential that high level City
administrators and politicians take the concept
of sustainability on board. PRESUD contributes to
this.

sustainable development

• It is important be monitored and take into
  account the results and suggestions for more
  efficient work in order to attain a better
  quality of development. The PRESUD peer reviews
  have proved very important for this point of
  view.

In order to have a more rational and objective
point of view of the work that has been done, and
to change the policies that are not sustainable,
it is very useful to have a look from the
outside. The PRESUD reviewers have contributed to
administrators having a clearer idea of the
effects of their work.
The challenge for a sustainable city, has a lot
to do with new ideas and an attitude of
implementing new policies in the framework of
governance. This kind of forma mentis is very
different from the idea developed in the
nineties, when the main concept was to simply
follow the rules.

The VENICE ECOBAG the Idea
The VENICE ECOBAG project is the Vesta ZTL BUS
services answer to input collected during the
management of the ZTL service set up on 25th
March, 2002 (ZTL bus is the tourist bus
restricted access zone charging scheme)
During the period April and August 2002 a survey
targeting the drivers of tourist buses was
carried out with the aim of collecting
information necessary for an improvement of the
service. Between September and October 2002
press articles regarding the starting phase of
the ZTL BUS service and the opinions expressed
by the workers in the field of tourism and by
institutional actors were collected, noted and
analysed. On different occasions the behaviour
of tourists that arrive in Venice by bus have
been observed, focusing on the way they eliminate
waste and for information. The Tourism
Department of the city of Venice has drawn up a
tourist charter ten suggestions to make
tourists more aware and modify their behaviour

The Values
As an initiative targeting tourists , the VENICE
ECOBAG expresses four key values that represent
the different uses and strengths of the
container
ETHICAL
The VENICE ECOBAG is comfortable and practical,
with the city map, the events diary and useful
information. It will be even richer with the
aluminium bottle for water which is foreseen.
USEFUL
The VENICE ECOBAG invites the tourist to respect
the city and gives him a way to collect and throw
away personal waste.
FOR EVERYONE
The VENICE ECOBAG is for people of all ages and
has no social limits as its basic version is sold
for a symbolic price of 1.
The VENICE ECOBAG is a dynamic symbol which
communicates about and promotes Venice during and
after the visit, expressing the persons ethical
support

The Contents
The VENICE ECOBAG will be distributed at a
symbolic price of 1 from ZTL BUS thanks to the
support of sponsors.
The contents of the VENICE ECOBAG will be
enriched in the future with a recycled aluminium
bottle with the trademark of Venice and with a
map of all the fountains located all around the
city. This is the first step of the Acqua di
Venezia project promoted by the Citys
environment department.

Distribution
The distribution of the VENICE ECOBAG will be
done on a prior reservation basis at the check-in
counter ZTL BUS n.4 Petroli where around 70 of
the buses arriving in Venice come to.

The eco area at the Tronchetto
One of the objectives of the VENICE ECOBAG
project is to make the tourist behave more
responsibly with regards to the city. Leaving
the tourists waste in the Tronchetto area will
reduce the impact of the visitors on the
historical centre of the City.
