Title: Quality of Hypothesis formation

1
Improving Argumentation Skills
  • Quality of Hypothesis formation
  • Quality of evidence
  • Why have good definitions
  • Explaining how why the evidence supports your
    stance

2
Quality of Hypothesis
  • Your main hypothesis should be not to
    broad/narrow
  • If it is too narrow you wont be able to find
    counter evidence
  • Only consider two variables, not special
    conditions
  • If it is too broad then you wont be able focus
    your paper

3
Quality of Hypothesis
  • Your counter hypothesis should directly address
    your pro-hypothesis
  • E.g., when preparing for conservation ex you
should have primarily focused on countering your
own arguments rather than countering other roles
    pro arguments
  • Cf. Extraversion is not related to non verbal
skills vs. General Ability is related to non
    verbal skills

4
Discuss with peer write down goals to improve
  • What is the hypothesis if your written
    assignment?
  • Is it too broad/too narrow
  • What is the counter hypothesis?
  • Is it appropriate?

5
Connecting the research to your arguments
  • Describe relevant details of your research
  • Evidence supports your hypothesis
  • Find counter evidence for your hypothesis
  • Some only found evidence to counter other roles
    arguments
  • Research all relevant facets of each position
  • e.g., Conservationists research should address
both anti-pollution laws and info re negative
impact of socially irresponsible behavior on an
    orgns image)

6
Discuss with peer write down goals to improve
  • Describe relevant parts of the evidence you found
    that
  • Supports your hypothesis
  • Counters your hypothesis
  • If you didnt find either, set goals on how you
    will go about finding it
  • e.g., what terms to use in psycinfo
  • What are your definitions of your variables?

7
Why definitions?
  • Can help you evaluate whether the evidence you
    found is useful
  • Can help you understand why there is counter
    evidence/argue against other positions more
    effectively
  • E.g., if you know the similarities and
differences b/w your position and other people at
    the meeting then you can
  • Form effective coalitions
  • Address different motives more effectively
because you understand why they have different
    motives

8
Explaining the research
  • Explain how the research
  • Supports your argument AND
  • Counters others arguments against your argument
  • Identify flaws in your own argument and explain
how your claim is still valid despite the flaws

9
Discuss with peer write down goals to improve
  • How why does the evidence
  • Support your hypothesis
  • Counter your hypothesis
  • NOTE describing is different from explaining
  • If you dont know the answer set goals on how you
will go about answering this question

10
Improving Argumentation Skills
  • Definitions
  • Quality of Hypothesis formation
  • Breadth of Hypothesis
  • Appropriate counter hypothesis
  • Research Quality
  • Supporting the hypothesis counter hypothesis
    with good evidence
  • Explaining how why the evidence supports
  • Hypothesis
  • Counterhypothesis
