2This is the problem that the Missouri Compromise
solved
3Northerners did not want any more slave states
than free states so they could keep the balance
equal in the senate. Missouri entered the Union
as a slave state and Maine entered as a free
state, keeping the balance equal.
4This is what led to Bleeding Kansas violence in
1854
5Northerners and Southerners who were NOT Kansas
residents flocked to Kansas to vote on whether
Kansas should be a free or slave state.
Northerners and Southerners disagreed with the
results of the vote for Kansas being a slave
state by the citizens of Kansas.
6This is why many people were angry about the Dred
Scott decision
7The court stated that African Americans are not
citizens and therefore have no rights. This
angered anti-slavery people.
8This was the result of John Browns raid on
Harpers Ferry
9John Brown was caught and hung, becoming a martyr
to the anti-slavery people. This further divided
the North and South
10How were Lincolns and Stephen Douglas views on
slavery different?
11Lincoln opposed slavery. Douglas didnt like it,
but believed that states should have the right to
choose for themselves whether to have slavery or
not.
12This is where most southerners lived by the mid
1800s
13Farms and small towns (Only the very rich lived
on plantations!)
14This is why southerners wanted to keep their
slaves
15There were HUGE plantations down south that
needed many hands to harvest cotton and tobacco
cash crops. Slaves were profitable! They worked
long hours for no pay. Cheap labor means more
profits when you sell your cash crops.
16This is how slaves resisted slavery
17They worked slowly, broke tools, tried to escape
along the Underground Railroad, pretended to be
sick. These were ways to fight for their freedom.
18This was a slave rebellion that ended in slaves
returning to Africa
19The Amistad Rebellion
20This fear plagued free African Americans during
the times before the Civil War
21The fear of losing their freedom, especially
since the passing of the Fugitive Slave Law in
1850. Many slave catchers would grab even free
people claiming they were escaped slaves and sell
them down south!
22This was the Norths point of view on slavery in
the 1850s
23Most Northern states outlawed slavery
24These are two things the north wanted to gain by
winning the Civil War
25Reunite the country and end slavery
26This is the way Harriet Tubman helped slaves
escape to the North
27By using the secret pathway called the
Underground Railroad
28This was the main way the North made money
29Factories made manufactured goods in large
cities.
30This was a strategy the north used to keep the
south from getting supplies
31blockade
32This event officially started the Civil War
33The attack on Fort Sumter in South Carolina
34This is what the south saw as its advantages in
the war
35Southerners rural lifestyles better prepared
soldiers (good marksmen, good riders), best
leaders, knew the land, had many seasoned war
veterans from the Mexican War
36This is how the Confederates thought theyd win
the war.
37They thought the North would grow tired of
fighting and leave them alone
38Because new military technologies were invented,
this happened
39The weapons were more accurate and resulted in
massive casualties
40This was what the Emancipation Proclamation said
41It was a statement giving freedom to the slave in
the rebelling southern states.
42This is how African Americans contributed to the
war effort
43They fought as soldiers, built roads, and did
many chores for the army
44This describes the battle of Gettysburg
45This 3 day battle held in Pennsylvania was one of
the bloodiest battles in history. The North won.
From that point on, the south was unable to
mount another major attack on the north. Turning
point of the war
46This event split the Confederacy in half
47Siege of Vicksburg
48This is what happened at Appomattox Courthouse
49Lee surrendered the Southern army to Grant
50This is why Congress disagreed with Pres. Andrew
Johnsons Reconstruction Plan AND what the
Reconstruction Acts did for African Americans
51Pres. Johnsons plan was too easy on the South.
The Reconstruction Acts gave the African American
men the right to vote. Later, the 13th, 14th,
and 15th Amendments stated African Americans were
free citizens and the men had the right to vote
