Artillery in the First World War
  • By Robert Davis, Josh Bowen
  • And Dom Fripp

2
Different types of shells
  • In the first World War there were many different
types of shells. These include High explosive
shells, which were made to blow up hard and heavy
artillery. Another is called the Shrapnel this
was used to blow out barbed wire and easy soft
    targets

3
The destruction Caused by shells
  • The shells had caused great holes in the ground
and lots of water and mud gathered there. The men
also discovered that the shells werent doing
much to the German front line so they had to
    re-think their attack

4
The Guns used to shoot the shells
  • As the Germans were a lot further ahead in the
technology used for mortars. It was a great
achievement when the British caught the Germans
up and over took them in technology.
  • In 1914 a man called Sir Wilfred Stokes designed
an incredibly simple mortar that was easy to use.
  • This machine was then used all of the time and is
    still used today.

5
More Guns
  • The gun that is seen here is called the Mark II.

This gun was first used in 1916, it also had an
improved device to return the gun to the original
firing position.
This gun could withstand any weather conditions
and the shells that it used were 3.3 in caliber,
weighing about 18.5 pounds.
