Title: The Scientific Method has 7 Steps

1
The Scientific Method has 7 Steps
  • Its time to look at each step, one at a time.
But first, on your lab work sheet, please enter
what time it is right now for question 2. After
youve answered 2, click on the clock to
    continue.
  • p.s. Theres an electronic quiz that youll need
    to
  • complete and submit to me at the end of this
    activity.

2
Step by StepA guide to understanding the
Scientific Method
Click on the pictures in this corner to begin and
progress through this activity.
3
Step 1 Purpose
  • The purpose statement tells why you are doing the
investigation and may begin with To find out

4
Step 2 Information
  • During this step you gather information about
your subject. This includes, but is not limited
to your prior experience, reviewing research
materials, discussing the topic with others, and
recording all of the above in your journal.

5
Step 3 Hypothesis
  • After collecting information, you take and state
what you think will happen as a result of the
investigation. This is a possible explanation or
logical prediction stated clearly and concisely.
Your hypothesis usually begins with, If , then

6
Step 4 Procedure
  • These are the exact steps (written out before you
begin) needed in order to perform the actual
    investigation. Procedures also include the
materials needed to carry out the investigation.

7
Step 5 Results
  • The results are an organized presentation of your
experiment or investigation. The information you
obtained from the experiment can be expressed in
many ways, such as a graph or table, a picture,
    or even a paragraph.

8
Step 6 Conclusion
  • The conclusion summarizes what happened in the
experiment and tells whether your hypothesis was
proven to be correct or incorrect.

The thumbs up means they were correct in
following the procedures and reached the correct
conclusion after following the directions.
9
Step 7 Possible Errors
  • Possible errors are things that happen during the
experiment over which you have no control and
they can alter the results of your experiment. He
was supposed to record our data?
  • Can we wake him up?

Quiz Instructions
  • Youll need to be pay attention to the pictures
below, they are the answers to the questions.
Youll find out immediately if youve given the
correct answer, if not, youll be directed back
    to the question again.
  • After youve answered 3 on the worksheet, click
on the clock in the corner to begin.

Question 5
Hypothesis
  • When I need to look for more resources or tell
about what I already know about the investigation
before we start the lab, it is known as which
    step?

Question 6
  • If you make a prediction about what will happen
as a result of your investigation, then it is
    called this

Step 6 Conclusion
Step 1 Purpose

Question 7
  • Data from my investigation is called evidence and
this helps me to present my data in an organized
manner. This step is called what? Remember to

Procedure
19
Purpose for the first question?
  • Remember that the procedural step is where you
start with your investigation. The purpose
statement usually contains the words, To find
    out.
  • The picture showed something different.

Back to question 1...
20
Purpose? Well for question 6?
  • Remember the question was asking about
    predictions.
  • You know, If, then statements are hypothesis
    statements. The purpose statement usually
contains the words, To find out.

Back to the question 6...
21
Purpose - Youre right! Way to go!
  • The purpose is where everything starts for us.
It is the 1st step in our method and we usually
write out the purpose statement something like
this The purpose is to find out

Question 4 please
22
Information? Not quite. Lets reconsider this
one
  • The Information step is where we list what we
already know and then gather more information or
    resources, as needed.
  • Which step are we looking for? I thought it was
    the first one.

Step 2 Information
Back to question 3
23
Informational Text? Not quite. Lets reconsider
this one
  • Informational text provides information for us to
    refer to and use.
  • When something gets messed up in the experiment,
then we call it something different.

Back to question 4
24
Information - YES! Keep up the great work!
  • The Information step (Step 2) is where we list
what we already know and then gather more
    information/resources, as needed.

Step 2 Information
Question 6 please...
25
Hypothesis? For question 1?
  • Lets get back on the right track!
  • Remember that the hypothesis begins with If.,
    then
  • Lets go back to that picture and take a second
    look.

Back on the train and back to question 1...
26
An Educated Guess is a...
  • Hypothesis. Are you off track? Lets get back
    on the right track!
  • The question was about some one not starting the
    timer correctly.

Back on the train and back to question 4...
27
Hypothesis for question 5?
  • The hypothesis is your educated guess.
  • Gathering information is not about your
    hypothesis.

Back to question 5, youre almost done.
28
Hypothesis is correct!
  • I like your thinking! Youre right on track!
  • For example a good hypothesis would be If we
use a 15 cm ramp, then the dowel will go down the
ramp faster than if we use a 12 cm ramp.

Question 7 please...
29
Is Procedural Step your answer for 4?
  • Remember that procedure has to do with the
written steps and materials that are necessary to
    complete the lab.
  • Remember we were trying to figure out what we
call it when someone messes up.

Back to question 4...
30
Procedures your answer for 7?
  • Remember that procedure has to do with the
written steps and materials that are necessary to
    complete the lab.
  • If I remember correctly, the question was asking
    about evidence and presenting data.

Back to question 7...
31
Procedure - Yes!
  • The procedure does have the steps and materials
all written out before we start the lab.
  • Aspen and Tiffany are doing the lab according to
    the procedure.

Question 3 please...
32
Results? Hmmm Lets think about this.
  • The results are an organized presentation of your
    experiment or investigation.
  • The information you obtained from the experiment
can be expressed in many ways such as a graph, a
    picture, or even a paragraph.
  • The first step is what?

Back to question 3
33
Results? Hmmm Resourcesthey both start with
r.
  • The results are an organized presentation of your
    experiment or investigation.
  • Were looking for the answer about gathering
    resources.

Back to question 5
34
Results! Yes! Terrific answer. Youve been
paying attention.
  • The results are an organized presentation of your
    experiment or investigation.
  • Results can be expressed in many ways graphs,
tables, charts, a picture, or even a paragraph.

Question 8 please...
35
Conclusion? Lets think about this for question
2
  • The conclusion summarizes what happened in the
experiment and tells whether your hypothesis was
proven to be correct or incorrect.
  • Lets go back to the picture and look again -
    Its not about conclusions.

Back to question 2...
36
Conclusion? Lets think about this
  • The conclusion summarizes what happened in the
experiment and tells whether your hypothesis was
proven to be correct or incorrect.
  • The question was asking about predictions we make
before we begin about what will happen

Back to question 6...
37
Conclusion - Nice job!
  • The conclusion does summarize what happened in
the experiment and tells whether your hypothesis
was proven to be correct or incorrect.
  • Travis and Katie are excited that they were able
    to correctly complete the lab.

Question 2 please...
38
Possible Errors for 2?
Hey, wake up!
  • Lets think about who might be sleeping? Is it
    you? I hope not.
  • Lets go back to question 2 and look at the
picture of the girls using the dowel and the
    ramp.

Back to question 2...
39
7 Possible Errors
Hey, wake up! Sleeping again?
  • This is not the answer!
  • Lets go back to question 7 and think about what
we call evidence being presented in an organized
    manner.

Back to question 7...
40
Possible Errors - Yes! You are absolutely
correct!
  • Possible errors are things outside of our control
that can alter the results of our experiment.
  • He messed up our results because he didnt start
the timer when he was supposed to.

Question 5 please
41
Way too cool! Youre done!
  • Please write down what the young scientist is
saying on your worksheet for question 4.
  • One last thing what time is it? (Please record
your answer on the line for Question 5 on the
    worksheet.)
  • This slide show will self-destruct in 1 minute.
