Title: The Scientific Method ?A Way to Solve a Problem?
1The Scientific Method?A Way to Solve a Problem?
2What is the Scientific Method?
- It is the steps a scientist takes to answer a
question. - In other words, its a way to solve a problem.
3Scientist have to take the time to think
logically when they are investigating a question
or problem.
- They break things down into many steps that make
sense.
4- First, scientists develop a testable question and
gather information. - Is blue prettier than green is not testable.
- Second they form an hypothesis or prediction.
5 Hypothesis vs Prediction
- A hypothesis is a testable statement.
- Ex Driving over 55mph uses more gas per mile
than driving under 55.
- A prediction is an If-then statement showing
cause and effect. - Ex If one drives more than 55mph, he will burn
more gas per mile.
6The third step is to create and conduct an
experiment to test their hypothesis.
7A key to experiments is observing what happens
and writing it down.
- Experiments consist of a control group and an
experimental group
8Groups
- The control group is there as a comparison.
Nothing is done to this group. Ex a car driving
55mph.
- The experimental group (same type of car driving
over 55mph) is where the actual test is being
conducted. It contains the dependent and
independent variables.
9Variables
- Independent variable is what is being manipulated
or changed in the experiment. (speed of the car) - Dependent variable is what you are looking to see
happen. It is dependent on the other variable.
(amount of gas used per mile)
10Once a scientist completes an experiment, they
often repeat it to see if they get the same
findings and results.
- This is really what we call verification, or
checking things out to make sure everything was
valid and will happen again and again.
11Fourth Step
- Scientists compile their experimental data and
write reports and make charts and graphs to
explain their data.
12Fifth Step
- Draw a conclusion
- Was the hypothesis proven or disproven?
13Sixth, scientists share their experiments and
findings with others.
- Because they share their experiments and
findings, scientists can learn from each other
and often use someone elses experiences to help
them with what they are studying or doing.
14The steps of the Scientific Method are
- Question and Research
- Hypothesis and Prediction
- Experiment and Repeat
- Data
- Conclusions
- Share data
