History of Umeå 3000 B.C. Rock carvings prove
existence of the first "people of Umeå". 1000
B.C. Settlements appear along the
shores. 1622 Umeå is founded by King Gustav Adolf
II. 18th c. The city burns, a bit at a
time. 1888 Huge fire in the city, 77 of
inhabitants homeless. 1901 The first Umeå
regiment. 1929 Nyströms Karosseri was
founded (now Volvo Truck Corporation). 1957 Umeå
Hospital, regional hospital for upper
Norrland. 1965 Umeå University opens. 1995 100
000 inhabitants, increased from 50 000 in 1966.
