- West Java, which will have no tsunami warning
system until 2007, was spared by its location
from the tsunami run up associated with the
January 26, 2004 Great Sumatra earthquake and
Indian Ocean tsunami that devastated 12 countries
in the Indian Ocean basin and killed 230,000. - But, West Java was not spared this time.

- At least 531 were reported killed with 280
missing. - Extensive damage to hotels, beach front homes,
and boats occurred as a result of the
2-meter-high (6 foot) wave that ran up about 300
meters inland in some places. - Providing a crude warning, the ocean withdrew
about 225 meters from the shore approximately
one-half hour before the tsunami wave struck
Pangandaran.

15RUMORS CAUSE PANIC JULY 19, 2006
- Rumors of another killer wave sparked mass panic
on Wednesday in Pangandaran, the town hardest hit
by the tsunami. - Release of an amateur video that captured some of
the reality and horror of the disaster helped to
fuel the panic. - More than 1,000 people ran from the beach area or
jumped on bikes or in cars and headed inland amid
shouts of The water is coming!

- The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
and Japans Meteorological Agency issued warnings
of a possible tsunami about 15 minutes after
Mondays quake. - The tsunami struck Java about 45 minutes later
before authorities had time to warn anyone on the
coast. - With no warning sirens or alarms on the beaches,
getting the message to significant numbers of
residents and tourists would likely have been
impossible.
